Contrary to the notions of mundane and being a dead end job, forklift driving can make for a thoroughly rewarding career.   • Experience: If you are already an experienced driver, like a trucker, then the experience would prove invaluable for you in Forklift driving. Before we even get to skills, it's important to note that almost all employers around the world, consider experience over technical skills. Australia is no exception and Australian firms look for experienced operators to keep goods moving in their warehouses and manufacturing facilities.
  • Licenses: In Australia you need to have a special forklift license in order for you to start your career. There are basically two types of forklift licenses that are issued, namely LF and LO. LF license is for all kinds of forklifts including side loaders and telescopic. LO license would allow you operate a Order/Stock picker forklifts. Make sure you have all the technical qualifications and licenses before you set about looking for a job.
  • Communication skills: Communication skills is a must for forklift operators as they have to work in tandem with numerous other professionals on the floor. Factories and warehouses have limited scope for errors, and sometimes they can prove costly. Make sure you work on your communication skills before the interviews.
  • Safety awareness: Safety protocols assume heightened importance for
forklift operators. Lapses in safety can cause a lot of damage, to materials and to human life. Make sure you are thoroughly aware of all the standard safety protocols for forklift operators. Ignorance can cost you your job and career.

  • Judgement: Having good judgement is also an essential for being a successful forklift operator. Everyday you are likely to face multiple situations which will require analysis by your mind. How much you can load on to the forks? How can you make this stock move faster? These are some of the problems you are going to face, and they would require astute sense of judgement.
