The Verdict Is In, the Ram 1500 and the Ram 2500 Are the Trucks to Own
Posted: May 29, 2014
It is the year 2014, and the ratings for new trucks have just been published. Both the 2014 Ram 1500 and the 2014 Ram 2500 have been recognized as two of the Top Rated Cars on Edmunds.com. It is not often that the best ratings for different levels of trucks go to the same manufacturer. A tip of the hat has to go the engineering department for a job well done. If you are in the market for a new truck, look no further.
Both vehicles were evaluated of performance, comfort, interior, value, and whether they were fun to drive. Each came through a rigorous set of tests with a cumulative grade vastly superior to any other make or model, from any other manufacturer.
In the category of performance, both the Ram 1500 and the Ram 2500 received a "B" rating in the subcategories of acceleration and braking. These are trucks built to carry or tow a load, so this comes as no surprise. A truck that accelerates, changes direction, and stops like a jack rabbit is not appropriate for either carrying or towing a load. These two vehicles received "A" grades for steering, handling, drivability and towing ability. This was a top of the class rating for each of these four pieces of criteria. Tests found that these trucks steer straight down the road, and that they exhibit little or no roll when turning. Shifting in the 8-speed automatic transmission is nearly imperceptible with small rpm changes between each gear. This facilitates tow stability and, due to the small rpm range difference between each gear, provides unmatched range.
Regarding comfort, both vehicles were rated "B" for wind and road noise while garnering an "A" for seating, and for ride comfort. The seats are designed to support all pressure points of a person’s body while sitting. The back, the shoulders, and the thighs receive equal and continuous support providing a rare comfort level in this class of vehicle. These trucks come standard with rear coil springs rather than the leaf type providing a smooth ride even in broken terrain.
Under the category of interior, these trucks received "B" ratings for ingress/egress and visibility. The doors open wide with plenty of room to get in and out of the vehicle and A-pillar grab bars at every door help those movements, but, just as in every 4-wheel drive vehicle, the elevation above the ground can give some people trouble. Visibility is clear to the front and sides with some obstruction to the rear. This can be overcome by adding the optional back-up camera to eliminate any blind spots. The "A" ratings in ergonomics, available space, and storage area within the cab.
What value do these vehicles have in comparison to others? Well, under cost and warranty the Ram 1500 and the Ram 2500 received a "B" rating. They cost a bit more at the outset, but that is alleviated over time. For all other subsections under the value category, both trucks received "A" ratings. The quality of build, the added features, the MPG rating, and the value of ownership all excelled beyond expectations. The quiet ride shows that the build is solid, even in those unseen parts. The trucks are built with features beyond those of any other vehicles in their respective categories. The roadside assistance package matches the powertrain warranty at 5 years/100,000 miles.
The smoothness of the driving experience and the outrageous personality exhibited by these trucks make them fun to drive. Both trucks received a "B" rating under those subcategories. For more information on these great Ram trucks, visit your local Ram dealership.
