The Importance of Nissan Patrol Engine Coolant
Posted: Feb 17, 2019
The new Nissan Patrol is an excellent hard working vehicle that you can use as a family vehicle at the weekends. It comes supplied with plenty of equipment that gives most SUVs a decent run for the money, and this includes an excellent choice of engines. However, no engine no matter how good it is can function without a decent amount of cooling. The most important part of the cooling system is the coolant itself; if this is not circulating the Patrol engine will quickly overheat, and you will be stranded. Let’s take a closer look at what engine coolant is and why you should choose a high quality coolant for your Nissan Patrol.
What is Engine Coolant?
Engine coolant is typically a blend of water mixed with a number of additives to improve the cooling properties of the liquid. This mixture is pumped in and around the engine to draw any heat away and ensure that the engine can work at an ideal operating temperature. The engine coolant circulates in a continuous loop, this will include the radiator, and that is where the coolant itself is cooled before it’s circulated back into the system.
What Types of Additives are Used?
The engine coolant additives are used to allow for a higher operating temperature for the engine. This will cool the engine furnace, and as an added bonus it will inhibit the development of corrosion to slow down and/or prevent rust altogether. There are a number of different additive mixes used, and these will determine the types of engine coolant that you may choose to use. Each engine coolant type may have properties that are suitable or not suitable for your Patrol, so it’s important to choose a good mixture. There are three main types of engine coolant available, they are:
Inorganic Acid Technology (IAT): This is a more traditional coolant mixture that has a green colour, and it’s typically used in older vehicles.
Organic Acid Technology (OAT): This is a very different chemical composition than IAT, it’s red in colour, and it mixes IAT with OAT components to maximise the best cooling properties of both.
Waterless Engine Coolant: This is an extremely expensive engine coolant that’s often used on classic cars, high performance vehicles and in motorsports.
The Importance of Colours
As you can see, the two main types of engine coolant used in domestic cars are either green or red. However, certain engine coolant products are available in a number of other colours too, such as: pink and purple. The colour of the engine coolant indicates which coolant you’re using in the engine, and it can be matched to the bottle. It’s not advisable to mix these colours yourself; the formulas are carefully put together and mixing them could affect your coolant performance.
