Augmented reality is a 3d environment that enhances everyday life, it works by creating a digital layer on top of what you see blending the virtual world with reality. It is currently being used by smartphone apps and special AR glasses. You probably used AR in the past, think of Pokemon Go and those filters that add facial features in Snapchat and Instagram. But AR is much more than just a game, it can be used in everyday life to enhance the way we interact with daily tasks.

AR will change the way we shop, whether its online or in store this technology will help you shop. Online, you will be able to try on outfits without leaving your house or see a piece of furniture in your new decor before buying anything. When shopping in store, you will be able to see the specification and the price of every item on the shelves. Big store chains will save money normally spent on price adjustment which will be done remotely for every branch in all locations.

When traveling a virtual guide will teach you everything about the history and culture of the sites you visit. It will also be easier to find tourist attractions. When a foreign language is spoken a translation will be displayed before your eyes.Augmented reality is currently being implemented in hospitals where doctors can see the vital signs of their patients when conducting surgery.

Schools and museums are using AR to teach. This interactive method gets better results from students who can visually understand the subjects taught. For example, they can see the entire solar system in front of their with the ability to interact with the planets.

Advertisement is the most lucrative market for AR, imagine a billboard that shows you a personalized ad that is tailored to your shopping preferences. It has been proven that such specific ads on Facebook convert hundreds of times more than regular ads. This means that such ads cost more therefore they generate more profit for ad agencies.

Augmented reality glasses range from $150 to $2,000. The technology was first tested by Google in 2013 when it rolled out Google Glass to the public. This beta version of AR glasses sold at a price of $1,500 and was limited to 8,000 units. In 2017 Google Glass was released to a broader audience.

This technology is still in its beginnings and there are many more potential applications, there are so many sectors of the industry who can profit from the invasion of this new tech. And with the prices of these devices, approaching realistic numbers, more people will have access to AR in the near future. Imagine having an AR contact lens that displays anything from the weather to a movie, while you are taking the buss or waiting in line for a coffee. Such technology is in the works and will roll out very soon, new startups are experimenting with prototypes of AR contact lenses, so expect to see them on the shelves within five to ten years.
