Reason behind the celebration of Shivaratri
Shivaratri is a pious festival of Hindus that is celebrated to honor Lord Shiva and his perennial power. According to the Hindu scriptures and tests during the time of Samundra Manthan, a pot full of poison came out of the ocean that terrified all demons and even the gods. The people at that time believed that the poisonous pot would destroy the earth and that is why they were very afraid. And no one could be trusted with Lord Shiva to help the situation. Being a savior, Lord Shiva came forward and heard the plea of the people. Therefore, he drank the pot of poison, kept it in his throat and did not swallow it. This is why it is also known as Neelkanth since the poison had turned blue in his throat. And to celebrate his extraordinary power to save the earth, we celebrate Shivaratri. It is one of the reasons, while there are many more.

Maha Shivratri (known as "The Night of Shiva") is a Hindu festival that is celebrated annually in reverence to Lord Shiva. Shivratri (in Sanskrit 'ratri' means night) is the night in which Lord Shiva is believed to have performed the Tandava Nritya, the dance of creation, the primordial preservation and destruction. This festival is celebrated for a day and a night. Masik Shivaratri time is also known as Shivaratri (and written as Sivaratri, Shivaratri, Sivarathri or Shivarathri). On this auspicious day, the devotees glorify, honor and worship Lord Shiva with sanctifying rituals throughout the night. For devotees of Shiva, this day is the most auspicious day of the year, since it is believed that whoever worships him with true devotion is freed from all sins and blessed with Nirvana or Moksha (liberation from the eternal cycle of life and death). According to the Vedas, the universal spiritual energy generated by favorable planetary positions is at its peak during this time. Therefore, Mahashivratri puja benefits and has a profound impact on the devotees of the Supreme Lord. Every year, the Rudra Center organizes a great celebration for Maha Shivratri where the devotees participate in Rudra Abhishek. Bhajans, the singing of Rudram, the satsang with Neeta Singhal and the dances are part of this and the devotees experience the divine energy of Shiva in
the perfect environment of Chakra Yog. We invite you to attend this happy celebration of the union of Shiva with Shakti anytime between 6:38 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. Participation is free.
