A dream job is one where your workplace is like your second home and your boss is friendly and easygoing. But, even if that is the case, these are 5 things that you should avoid saying to your boss unless you want to jeopardize your job.

"I can’t wait to get a new job"

Even if your boss is the best of your best friends, this is the most forbidden sentence one can utter in front of their boss. No matter how liberal a person is, no one will ever be willing to lose an employee. If you are efficient at what you do, there is no point of putting everything at stake by saying your wish out loud.

"I’m too hungover to come to work"

This is a free world and you are absolutely free to believe in the saying: "Work hard and party harder"! But, your boss should be the last person getting bothered by the consequences of those parties. The simplest solution is to not drink so much that you wake up with a hangover. But, even if you do, your boss doesn’t have to know that. This will create a bad impression and make him or her think that you are irresponsible. Saying that you are sick is a much better excuse since you are not going to get any brownie points for honesty.

"I can’t do that. It sounds way too boring"

When we step into the big bad world of jobs, we all start with huge aspirations and that’s actually a good thing. But that doesn’t mean that you ignore other work, no matter how small it is. Even if you realize that a particular project is not going to excite you, spare yourself the horror of letting your boss know. Even if you don’t intend to annoy your boss, he will invariably think of you as a snob because of your statement. And saying ‘no’ to work because it sounds ‘boring’ might portray you as a lazy person who makes up excuses to avoid work!

"Is this seriously your dream job?"

Every human being has high hopes and dreams about one’s career and your boss is no exception. Whatever position he or she is in is probably just the beginning for something much bigger and better. But, that doesn’t mean that you can ask such an intrusive question. This might trigger the wrong kind of emotions in your boss and you just might be on the receiving end of his/her emotional outbreak. Moreover, asking this question shows that you are demeaning your current job and your boss will certainly not like this fact.

I need a raise ASAP

Nobody and, I repeat, nobody likes having a nagging employee around. If you are in dire need of money, make sure you know the raise and appraisal scheme of your company at the time of your joining. But, once you join, you must learn the art of staying patient. This doesn’t mean that you should tolerate any kind of financial exploitation. But, even then, the most intelligent way to get out of this is to look for a suitable job and leave the current one. Desperately asking for a raise can create unnecessary fuss which is extremely unhealthy for your own peace of mind.

Your career is primarily tied to your boss, no matter what. While she/he may be a trustworthy friend, your relationship with her should not let you go off limits…So, choose your words wisely and correctly!
