The common question among all the job seekers these days is how long should my resume be? How much information I should include on my resume? Basically, all these questions have different answers. Resume writing is a skill that job seekers need as part of their job search efforts. It is not going to help you land in your dream career by including your educational background and work experience details on your resume. Your resume needs to be precise and at the same time informative without the inclusion of irrelevant information.

A well-written resume highlights your top skills, includes overall work experience with key responsibilities and achievement, and briefs your educational background. These three are the foremost important factors you need to add in your resume. Remember, a resume is not an autobiography, it is your career marketing tool. This should include your key selling points.

Coming back to the question of how many pages I should write my resume? The answer is, it depends on your overall work profile. Employers/Hiring Manager receive 100+ emails and profiles for screening every day. Your resume needs to be strong and at the same time prominent which will help you get a job.

For Fresh Graduates:

If you’re a recent graduate looking to jump in the corporate world, then you can keep your resume limited to one page. Add your overall education details and the key skills that you have. One page resume is just adequate for a fresh graduate with no work experience to showcase.

Pro Tip: Don’t lie on your resume.

Make your resume short and crisp, add information in bullet points instead of writing it in the paragraph. Make sure you add an active email address and contact number. The ultimate goal should be to catch the attention of the employer.

For Experienced Professionals:

It is impossible to add your work profile and details in a one-page resume when you are an experienced professional. You can consider writing a two-page resume to highlight your past work experience and the projects you have handled.

Don’t add irrelevant stuff like hobbies and interests; instead focus on including key job responsibilities. Highlight the tools that you worked on, add project details under each work experience section. Remember, Hiring managers only take 6 seconds to look at resume so keep it short, simple and to the point.

For C-Suite Executives:

Consider a three-page resume only if you’re a senior-level executive with 15+ years of work experience. Include your entire work experience and projects/challenges you have handled. Add about your key achievements and leadership qualities. Keep one page for Project Annexure, where you can write about all the technical work.

Note that the length of a resume is not the key factor in hiring but it certainly matters during the screening process of your application. Hiring managers look for your skill-set and relevant job experience in order to screen your profile. Make sure you do your best to get the attention of your employer.

It’s all nice and sundry if you want to change your job in 2019, but don’t let your present manager know that just yet. It will be a risky proposition if they know about your job switch and you haven’t yet been able to find the right job.
