A Wide Choice of Places to Move To In the Caribbean

If you decide to move to the Caribbean you have plenty of choices because there are a lot of islands, and you might also consider Guyana which is actually in South America but is classed as part of the Caribbean by many geographers.

Prior to settlement by the British and the Dutch, Guyana had its' indigenous people who named it Guiana which means "land of water". There is plenty of that, with some heavy rains, and four main rivers which drain into the Atlantic Ocean. Guyana is the only English-speaking country in South America and the capital and main port is Georgetown. The country has beautiful rain forests, sugar plantations, rice fields, and reserves of gold and bauxite.

The population of Guyana is mainly of colonial origin but mixed with descendants of African and Indian slaves who were brought in to work the sugar plantations and rice fields. The country has a narrow plain along the coast which is only ten miles wide at its' widest point, and much of it has been reclaimed from the sea. There are a series of canals and dykes totalling over 140 miles in length. The climate is warm, with the average temperatures in Georgetown ranging from the mid 70's to the mid 80's and there is high humidity, but this is mitigated by the winds along the coast. There is a lot of rain, averaging 90" a year in Georgetown.

There are many forms of wildlife in Guyana including the largest land mammal which is the tapir, but monkeys and deer are the most common animals. There are also jaguar and ocelot. In addition, there are the armadillo, great anteater, and the sloth. There are lots of birds including vultures, humming birds, and kingfishers. There are also many snakes including the giant anaconda, and lots of lizards. If you like shrimp, the muddy waters off the coast are full of them.

Guyanese food is typically a mix of South American, South Asian, and Chinese, and makes use of plenty of the fiery red-hot chillies that are grown. A typical dish is pepperpot, a stew made of meat (usually beef, mutton, or pork), potatoes, and peppers, laced with cassareep which is a sauce concocted from cassava juice and spices. The Guyanese recommend making sure you have plenty of iced beer and locally produced rum on hand if you try this.

Of course, if Guyana doesn't sound the place for you, there are plenty of Caribbean islands such as St Vincent and the Grenadines. There are 32 islands making up St Vincent and the Grenadines, nine of which are in habited. These include the islands of Mustique, and Bequia, and many people say that Bequia is a better place to live than Mustique. Edward Teach, otherwise known as Blackbeard the pirate, used it as his base, and Drake and Nelson both popped in and took on supplies.

In fact, up until a very few years ago, the only way you could get here was by boat but now it has its' own airport. Back in the day, whaling was one of its' occupations, and the island logo is a whale. It is still legally allowed to catch four whales every year, but they have to be for consumption on the premises.

Wherever you go on Bequia you will see white sails, because the Bequians just love to get out on the water at every opportunity. After church on Sunday, they all head off to the beaches, and there are boats bobbing about on the water everywhere you look.

Of course, there are other Caribbean islands and you might want to spend time investigating them if you really do want to move to the Caribbean. If you decide upon St Vincent, or perhaps Guyana, you will need a company that is familiar with shipping to Guyana or shipping to St Vincent and the surrounding islands, because their staff will be familiar with local laws and customs and what you are, and are not, allowed to import. There are companies in the UK who specialise in shipping to the area and will be able to give you a lot of advice if you are planning to move there permanently.
