The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is the federal agency that is tasked with enforcing federal anti-discrimination laws relating to the areas of hiring, wages and benefits. The two roles EEOC performs can be described thus:

  • Preventing the violations of law violations with its outreach, education and assistance programs
  • Enforcing its laws by investigating, settling or litigating the laws.

The EEOC recently came up with a Strategic Enforcement Plan for 2018-2022. Making a sustainable impact in advancing equal employment opportunity and freedom from discrimination are the chief objectives of the EEOC’s enforcement efforts. The EEOC establishes a Strategic Enforcement Plan every four years with the aim of prioritizing and setting forth strategies to integrate all the elements of their enforcement efforts.

So, how does the EEOC’s enforcement efforts matter to organizations’ HR? The onus of determining ways to keep their organizations compliant in terms of enforcing anti-discrimination policies lies entirely with human resources. The enforcement actions they are expected to take include the following:

  • Ensuring that the barriers to equal opportunities are eliminated
  • Bringing about a feeling of inclusion among employees
  • Providing equal access to opportunities within the workplace.
