Wireless Internet Access Points give the users freedom to access Internet via their computers and laptops without using any cables. In the language of computer networking, the Wireless Access Points are configured devices that allow Internet access to several devices. The Wireless Access Points act as a bridge between the wired computers and the existing wireless networks. The most important benefit of using the wireless access point is that the computers and other devices connected to the typical web network do not require any physical connection through hubs and wires.

The users can freely roam with their laptop from one room to another and other places within a certain geographical limits. Two protocols dictate how the data is transmitted and received; the two classes of these protocols are ad hoc and managed connections. These two protocols are important to define the way in which the different nodes will communicate with each other. So let us take at a look at them in detail below:

  • Ad Hoc connections - In this type of wireless network, the computer interacts directly with another computer in the network system. The advantage of this type of system is that it is very easy to set up a few computers without worrying about management of accessing to the wireless network.
  • Managed connections - In the managed connections unlike the ad hoc connection, all the users in the wireless network are required to communicate with the help of a central hub known as ‘master’. For any two computers to interact, it is important that they send/receive data to/from the master. The master serves as an arbitrator to the system keeping a control on the logical access to the network and other network services like firewalls, DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) and VPN (virtual private network).

Applications Of Wireless Internet Access Points:

  • Allows the freedom to connect to Internet without using cables
  • Employed in difficult-to-wire environments like buildings with solid or finished walls
  • In the offices or environments where the workplace and location changes frequently
  • Used in the temporary LANs special projects in trade shows, construction sites and exhibitions
  • Used at peak time in companies when they require additional workstations
