Understanding Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)

What is GMAT?GMAT is a computer based online test that is conducted by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), a Virginia, USA based international non-profit organization. Purpose of the GMAT exam is to test graduates willing to take admissions in master courses of management, Finance, and accountancy in foreign universities. Many of the world-renowned universities have come together to accept the scorecards of GMAT for giving admissions to foreign and native students in their PG courses.

Universities That Accept GMAT Scorecards In the United States of America, universities like:Harvard UniversityNey York Institute of TechnologySan Jose State UniversityTexas University, etc. are some of the elite institutes that accept GMAT scorecards.

Other than the USA, countries like England, Australia, Singapore, NewZealand, India, and Canada favor candidates with GMAT scorecards.

Outline for GMAT’s SyllabusGMAT’s paper has four sections, which are:Analytical Writing AssessmentIntegrated ReasoningQuantitativeVerbal

Section 1: Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA)Duration: 30 minutes

The AWA section consists of 1 brief argument. Candidates have to first read it, and then have to come up with an essay commenting upon the given argument. They must provide the examiner with enough evidence by which they have made their assumptions and conclusion. Correct usage of English grammar is a must when writing the final draft of AWA essay.

Section 2: Integrated Reasoning (IR)Time: 30 minutesNo. of Questions: 12

In this section, candidates are provided with multiple data tables and graphs. Based on their perception and analysis, they have to answer 12 questions that check the analytical, logical, and critical thinking skills. Deep knowledge of curves, graphs, data sets is a must to score well in IR.

Section 3: Quantitative Sections (QS)Time: 75 minutes

No. of Questions: 37

This section is much like the one discussed above, but instead of providing collective graphs or data tables, candidates have to face separate questions which check their basic mathematical skills. The section covers basic geometry, arithmetic, and algebra.

Section: 4 Verbal

Time: 75 minutesNo. of Questions: 41 This section evaluates the English writing, speaking, and comprehensive skills of candidates.They have to answer questions based on paragraphs. Correct or re-write sentences written with incorrect grammatical syntax. And draw conclusions from given statements.

Some Basic Rules Regarding GMATThere is no upper age limit for attempting the examA student can only make a maximum of 8 attempts to clear the exam in a lifetimeThere is no fix exam date, but a schedule that allows willing candidates to appear for the paper multiple times in any given year.No one can attempt this exam five times in a single year.GMAT scorecard is valid for a span of 5 yearsThere has to be a difference of at least 16 days between two consecutive attempts of the Graduate Management Admission TestThe minimum age limit to take GMAT is 18. In case a student below the age limit is willing to take this test, he/she has to have the consent of their parents or guardians in writing.
