So you have decided to get a pop up canopy because of how convenient they are to set up and take down. But naturally you have some questions about what you are looking for. The following information is meant to be a guide to help with selecting a pop up canopy by providing you the basic information needed to make the choice.

Basics

I am sure you are already aware that pop up canopies are well known for being very easy to setup and use. But you may not be aware of why they are so easy to setup. The main feature that makes them so easy to set up is how the frame is built. It is one piece that collapses instead of being taken apart. This is extremely convenient because you are not going to lose any peices of the frame when taking it from place to place.

Not all canopies are going to be built the same. but most of the ones labeled as pop up canopies will be similar, and very simple to set up, regardless of brand.

Setup

It should take no more than 2 people to set up a pop up canopy. You need to expand the frame to its max size, and then attach the top. Once it is all attached properly, you just need to extend the legs to their full height, and use the stakes to secure it to the ground.

Tear down is just the opposite, remove the stakes, lower the legs, and compress the frame; Then remove the top. And once you pack it all up you all set to go!

Your needs

the first question most people have when looking for a pop up canopy is "how big do I need it to be?" But this is not the most important question, The most important question is "what am I going to use this for?" But the good news is that once you know what you will be using the canopy for you will also have an idea of what size you will need. For instance, using a canopy for a cookout will typically require more space than one used for a craft show. But the main point is that the amount of space you need is going to be determined by what you are doing with it.

To do the math and figure out roughly what size you need, you can use recommended measurements. For instance if you are going to have people standing in the canopy conversing its recommended to estimate 10 to 12 square feet per person expected. but if you are going to instead have people sitting in chairs for a lecture, or speech. you only need to leave 5 to 6 square feet per chair. Any other items such as tables will also need to be calculated to determine your specific needs.

What is waterproof? and what is water resistant?

Waterproof canopy tops are coated with a special treatment to make them completely resistant to water, On the other hand, water resistant tops are good at keeping the water at bay, but after a while can start to leak.

You tend to find more water resistant tops on the pop up canopies because of how much easier it is to set up. and the main feature of a instant or pop up canopy is its ease of setups.

Frames

When it comes to pop up canopy frames you really only have two choices, you can go with the lightweight aluminum or the much more common steel. each has its pros and cons.

Strength: Aluminum is more bendable than steel, So it may be a factor if you plan on using your instant canopy for hosting events frequently, accidents do happen. frames can be bent.

Weight: Aluminum is lighter than steel, so if you plan on carrying the canopy with you all over the place you may prefer a aluminum frame. The lighter weight also helps with setup if you are going to need to do it by yourself. But if you are going to be in a windy location, the extra weight of steel might help keep you canopy on the ground.

Tops

Same as the frame, there are really only two choices for tops. You can either have Polyester, Or Vinyl.

Polyester is the more common top for instant canopies. It is durable, and water resistant. But can be thicker and tougher for a more heavy duty top. You can determine the thickness by looking at a number called the "denier" basically, the higher the number, the thicker the material.

Vinyl on the other hand is usually a polyester top treated with a vinyl coating that improves its resistance to the elements, such as rain, and sun. Many vinyl tops are also certified as flame resistant, which could be a plus if you plan on using it for cookouts.

What else can I get?

There are a few other accessories or features that you will find on canopies. the main one being side walls. These can be in the form of netted side walls to keep the bugs out, or it can be solid side walls to keep out the elements.

You can usually chose to enclose only parts of your canopy, Or enclose the entire thing. a common setup is either having three sides closed off with solid walls (commonly found on canopies used for selling things, or displaying things). Another common setup is a canopy that is completely closed in (3 sides and 1 entrance) with netted walls. This is usually used to house food at cookouts, The netted walls work wonders to keep the bugs away from your food.

I hope This guide has been a help to you in your search for the perfect canopy. I know the technical lingo can be confusing at times, but I believe I covered the most important aspects of a Canopies. I also hope I was able to make what may have been a difficult decision a bit easier with the information I have provided.
