Facelift is now a popular plastic surgery trend. Usually, women are bothered with signs of aging that start to appear on their face earlier than expected. The reason for these signs is simply the continuous change that our skin is undergoing.

How does your skin change with age?

  • Cell division becomes slower
  • The lower layer of the skin; dermis, becomes thinner
  • The high reserves of protein elastin and collagen that are required to keep the skin taut start to break down.
  • Loss of elasticity makes the skin more prone to the effects of gravity, which makes it sag.
  • The overall composition of the tissue and muscles changes, which may cause wrinkles

Facelift – Quick Overview

Facelift is now considered as the most extensive technique by plastic surgeons for the removal and/or reduction of age-related wrinkles and sagging skin.

The technical word used for facelift is rhytidectomy. It is a surgical procedure, which aims to correct the prominent signs of aging on the face and neck. This procedure generally involves lifting the skin off the face to tighten the skin and the tissues on the surface beneath. The following signs of aging may be corrected with facelift by plastic surgeons :

  • Creases below the eyelids
  • Appearance of jowls because of loss of muscle tone in the lower face
  • Displaced fat
  • Mid face sagging
  • Creases along the nose and corner of the mouth
  • Loose skin
  • Double chin on a person with normal weight
  • Sagging eyelids and eyebrows
  • Skin discoloration

Some of these conditions require supporting procedures by plastic surgeons such as eyelid surgery and brow lift for the correction of age-related conditions of the eyes.

Procedure of Facelift Surgery

1. Anesthesia

The procedure of facelift surgery by plastic surgeons requires anesthesia. The patients have a choice between a general anesthesia and administration of intravenous sedative together with local anesthesia to numb the skin.

2. Incision

The type of incision depends on the change you are expecting from the procedure. According to individual requirements, the procedure includes three types of incisions:

  • Traditional

This facelift incision involves hairline, at the temple, as the starting point. The incision then continues down the ears and lower scalp. In this procedure, fat is redistributed from the face, and the underlying tissue is also repositioned.

  • Limited

This is an alternative procedure to traditional face-lift. The incisions in this technique are shorter and involve a route starting from the ear to either under the upper lip or within the lower eyelids.

  • Neck lift

Neck lift incisions are specifically used in plastic surgery techniques to correct the conditions of fat deposits under the chin, loose neck skin and sagging jowls. The starting point of this incision is the front of the ear lobes that ends in the lower scalp.

3. Closing

The closing of the facelift surgery is a crucial part of the process because it involves carefully concealing the incision lines within the hairline and contours of the face.
