Admission

If you have completed your post-graduation from any of the reputed pgdm colleges in Bangalore, then you would be eligible for a doctoral program. These programs are offered by various Universities on a full-time basis or on a part-time basis. The part-time option allows those working to take up a Ph.D. program. Admission is open for Ph.D. programs for those who have completed a post-graduation in management with 55% marks or having an M.Phil. qualification in Management.

Admission is through an entrance test. Those clearing the entrance test would be enrolled for the Ph.D. program. Unlike other undergraduate and postgraduate programs, management phd programs have limited seats. This is because every Ph.D. student, known as a research scholar needs to work under a registered guide of the University. Each guide can have a limited number of students working under them. Hence there are not many seats available and getting admission for a Ph.D. program is something you need to work hard to get.

The Program

Generally, the first year of the Ph.D. program will be devoted to completing the course work. Here you would study research methodology and techniques in detail, to help you carry out your research. You would also study advanced courses in your specialization area. There would an examination at the end of the course work, which you need to clear to move on to the research phase.

In the research phase, you need to select an area of research and decide on the topic. You would do this in consultation with the guide allotted to you, who would be a senior professor with sufficient research experience. The topic then would be approved and you can start your research work.

Research and the award

Research work involves collecting information about the topic and carrying out a study. This could involve surveys, interviews, etc. Based on the data collected, you need to analyze and come out with your interpretation. The entire work you do is presented as a dissertation, which has to be submitted to the University.

There would be a viva-voce where the examiners would examine your research dissertation. If found satisfactory, you would be awarded the Ph.D. degree. This usually takes anywhere from 3 to 6 years. It is a prestigious qualification you can get, which can open up different career options.
