It’s an allergy: Ways to make your home or office a more allergy-free Zone
Posted: Jun 07, 2014
Some people only suffer from minor allergens. However, for those who are asthmatic and suffer from hay fever, there are ways that you can provide a good working and sleeping environment, no matter the severity of the allergy. Here are five ways to make your home or office more of an allergen-free zone.
- Remove the curtains -- Replace with curtains made of plain cotton or a synthetic fabric. Some people are allergic to polyester material and coming in contact with it may create a rash or red hives, depending on the sensitivity. However, do not be fooled, even if the area does not itch or have hives, you still may have an allergy. Did you know allergies send UK residents to the doctor annually and up to 3 percent of adults have this contact skin allergy?
- Remove carpeting -- Carpet can be home to thousands of mites that may increase people’s sensitivity to certain allergens. Though vacuuming with a HEPA filter is helpful to remove some offenders, it may not remove all the dust mites in a house. By switching to hardwood flooring, there is less possibility you may be allergic to the Nylon or the shag carpet itself.
- Allergy-proof the pillows and bedding -- It may be easy to have a flair-up if there is still thousands of dust mites around your house or you are allergic to the down feather pillows that you are using each night. Using synthetic materials may be better if you have moderate to severe allergies. Make sure to also wash bedding and also pillow covers at least once a week. This will help remove dust mites that may be lurking in the folds.
- Close the windows if you must be indoors -- There are many types of pollen outdoors that may spring up at various times of the year. If you have trouble with allergies on a daily basis, you may want to ask your UK doctor for an antihistamine. However, before you turn on any unit, you may want to clean the window sills and also tracks. This will make sure no pollens make their way inside the home or office and are flying around.
- Pets -- Though your son or daughter wants a pet, it may not be worth being miserable year-around. While UK homeowners and business owners may not be allergic to the pet itself, they may well be allergic to the dander that is left behind on pet hair.
How to gauge your Sensitivity
It is best to know the warning signs of having a severe reaction, as well to know what happens during a minor attack. This way, it is easier for you to tell when you may be having an allergy attack. However, don’t think that you will be safe once you stop using that scented Febreze. Did you know that allergies related to some chemicals can appear two to nine hours after initial contact with a product?
Do you have hypersensitivity? One way to determine if you have hypersensitivity is to know the signs. Do you have a persistent dry cough that will not go away? Are you having difficulty breathing? Sometimes when a person has a chemical hypersensitivity, they can also feel dizzy and get headaches fairly quickly. If you experience any of these signs, it is best to see a doctor as soon as possible and avoid using that particular cleaning agent (if it is found that it was the culprit in setting off an attack).
