Zoloft is a medication that is prescribed for treating depression, panic disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). It is classified as an antidepressant medicine recommended for adults: both male and female. This drug is grouped under the SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors).

How it works

The active ingredient contained in this medicine is the Sertraline. It works by influencing the various brain chemicals that are often unbalanced causing serious depression, obsessive-compulsive, panic and anxiety symptoms in adults.

Warning: patients should avoid using Zoloft drugs in case they are already taking pimozide doses, or if they are being treated with methylene blue injections!

Note: before using your sertraline antidepressants, make sure you have not taken any MAO inhibitor in the recent 2 weeks. This could cause severe drug interaction.

Before taking the medication

Make sure you have the right prescriptions before you begin taking your antidepressant doses. Discuss with your doctor on any medical conditions that could mean serious negative reactions or any undesired effects as well as complications.

Not everyone is medically suited for this treatment - in some medical conditions, one could be advised to avoid the drugs or take them with extra care. To be suited for Zoloft medication, tell the prescribing physician about the following:

  • If you have any seizure or epilepsy conditions
  • In case of a kidney or liver disorder
  • If you have a bleeding disorder including blood clotting problems
  • In case of any psychiatric disorders including suicidal thoughts
  • If you abuse drugs
  • In case of manic depression (bipolar disorder)

Note: in some cases, young patients who take these antidepressants are known to experience some serious thoughts of suicide in the preliminary treatments. Make sure the medication is constantly checked by your doctor to avoid any undesired effects.

It is important that you inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant while under this treatment. In some cases, this could cause some severe lung problems.

Zoloft is a medication best prescribed for patients older than 18. It can, however, be used for obsessive-compulsive disorder in children but not recommended for treating depression in children.

Using Sertraline doses

Strictly follow the doctor’s instructions while using your drugs. Do not alter the dosage neither should you prolong the treatment period. For better results, your doctor could advise on occasional changes to the medication.

Regularly take your medicine without missing doses. Using the medicine at the same time of the day could mean improved performance. The drugs can be taken before or after a meal.

Available in different forms for oral use, Zoloft doses should be carefully measured to ensure correct dosage. In case of the liquid form, ensure that you dilute it with 4 ounces of water, lemonade, ginger ale, orange juice or lemon soda.

Beware: the medicine could hinder some lab test result such as urine causing negative results.

Symptoms could take even 4 weeks of correct use before they show any signs of improvement. It is necessary that you keep on taking the doses as directed to avoid any withdrawal effects.

Common side effects

One could possibly experience a number of undesired effects. Discuss with your prescribing doctor on any of the following:

  • Mouth dryness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Insomnia
  • Appetite changes
  • Stomach upsets
  • Drowsiness, fatigue and dizziness
  • Low sex drive, hard to have an orgasm or impotence
  • Agitation and hallucinations among others
