How to Quickly Install Speed Humps
Posted: Mar 30, 2019
A series of rubber speed humps is a great way to calm traffic and lower speeds on your site. These speed bumps are economical and easy to fix to the road surface without any specialised training or tools. If you want to install a speed hump yourself, it’s quite a simple process once you’ve carefully planned out where it needs to be situated. Let’s take a look at how you can install a speed hump.
The Planning Phase
Most speed humps will come with a detailed instruction guide that you will need to follow carefully, so make sure you have it before you begin. Take some time to consider why you need a speed hump and where it needs to go to be effective. This will vary a great deal from site to site, but a good rule of thumb is to look at areas where traffic and pedestrians are in close proximity. Areas like this are often more prone to traffic accidents and injuries.
What Tools Do You Need?
You will need some readily available tools in order to install your speed humps. Don’t worry about any fixings as they should be included with the speed hump.
A hammer drill. A 14mm masonry drill bit. A 17mm socket. A hammer. A hand broom or industrial vacuum cleaner.
Steps to Install the Speed Hump
- Check the area, unpack the speed hump and check that everything is there. • Place all the necessary fixings together where you can easily reach them. • Place the speed hump where you need to install it and ensure that it’s in a straight line by using a tape measure or a piece of string. • Get the hammer drill, put the masonry bit in place and drill the holes through the speed hump to a depth of 120mm. Move the drill bit up and down a few times to make sure the hole is clear. • Move the speed hump out of the way. • Brush or vacuum away all the dust. • Place and carefully drive home the supplied fixings with the hammer. • Replace the speed hump to line up with the drilled holes. • Fix the speed hump in place using the M10 screws. • Avoid over tightening as this could as you could rip the plug. • Repeat the fixing procedure for every hole.
Cleaning Up
Once the installation has been completed, take some time to clean up all the dust and debris from the area. The installation can be easily done by a single person, but if you have help, it will go a lot faster. One person could prepare the holes, and another could follow on to fix the speed hump in place.
Professional Installation
If you’re in any doubt about installing a speed hump yourself, it’s a great idea to get a professional to do it for you. They will be able to work quickly to site your speed humps exactly where you need them.
