Question: How does the social definition of sex and gender define people?
Response: the question of whether a person is male of female can appear foolish as the answer appears obvious. However, the reality is that the determination of gender and sex relies on the social definitions that exist. The identification of a person’s sex relies on the definition of male or female that the person found in his society. The society uses the social definitions to determine other factors such as behavior. The definitions fail to acknowledge the existence of persons who do not fit the prescribed definition of male or female (30). Sexual variance exists in approximately every one in four births. The variations arise because of biological factors e.g. chromosomal defects. The infants are thus forced to undergo surgery and sexual reconstructions so as to fit the "appropriate" definition of male or female.
The first organization discussed in this essay is the Fatherhood Coalition formerly known as the Coalition for the Preservation of Fatherhood (CPF). A small group of non-custodial fathers meeting in Arlington created this group in December 1993. The organization deals with all matters involving or affecting father- child relationships. Its aim is to create equal parenting rights for men and women. The organization obtains funding from several sources. It obtains resources through the provision of professional legal advice and representation. The organization also obtains funding from donations given to the organization. Membership in the organization also finances the organization. The organization has very many members. The highest percentage of members is fathers facing child custodial problems and also those that get oppressed during the divorce process. There are very few married father members or those that have a successful divorce.
The manipulation of a child’s sexual anatomy can result in a self-identify crisis because the procedure robs a person an opportunity of self-discovery. A child who undergoes a sexual modification or correction procedure is also exposed to the reality that he or she has an abnormality (32).
Lesson: I have learned that a person’s sexuality and subsequent behavior is defined from birth. The social determination of normal and abnormal denies people an opportunity to self-realize. The definitive determination of a person’s sex and gender carries instructions on what the society considers appropriate male of feminine behavior. Individuals are thus born in a society that has pre-determined characteristics of male and female. I believe it is time the society questions the defined definitions and establish their impact on an individual.
