No matter how off-the-wall they are in terms of their choice of jewellery, the most important thing any couple will take into consideration when looking for a ring is its overall appearance. First impressions are extremely important, and even the least shallow of brides will admit that when viewing any number of rings, the most visually pleasing one will eventually be her choice.

There are, however, certain factors that can play in favour of less visually stunning rings. One of them, albeit often a fringe one, is the purported mystical powers and esoteric symbolism of the stone. And here, the diamond loses out considerably to other types of precious stones, such as sapphires, rubies or emeralds.

In fact, emerald engagement rings are among the most symbolic of these types of gemstones. Like sapphires or rubies, these stones have a mystical link to the past, evoking memories of a time which may never have existed, but is firmly ingrained into pop culture nonetheless.

In more practical terms, however, emeralds have also traditionally possessed arcane powers throughout time. The Greeks, for instance, favoured emerald engagement rings, believing that these types of stones could help to identify unfaithful lovers. According to Greek lore, impure thoughts could make the stone change its usual green lustre for a dull, lifeless colour, thus making the cheating party stand out.

Most importantly, however, emeralds are believed to have healing powers. Various reports throughout the ages have given accounts of emeralds curing eyesight problems, cardiovascular problems and issues related to glands, the kidneys, the liver or the intestines. Emeralds also, at one point, were used as an antidote for poison and as a pre-emptive measure against sundry illnesses. The gem is also believed to bring emotional peace and well-being and is connected to the Indian ‘chakra’ of the heart. Lovers will also be interested to know that, in ancient times, this stone was often viewed as an aphrodisiac.

Unfortunately, opinions on whether the stones work when loose or only when worn in emerald engagement rings or other types of jewels remain conflicted. What lovers buying this type of jewel can be sure of, however, is that the stone they are acquiring will be linked to centuries of mystical and esoteric tradition. It is solely up to them whether or not to give them credence.
