David Sylvain - The Man behind the formation of Japan
Posted: Jun 11, 2014
Generally, they (Two Batt brothers, David and Steve) sang for here and there in the locality in their school life. The two Batt brothers, David and Steve handled the guitar and vocal and drum part to entertain their local people. Though they both were talented and had sound knowledge of music, but still they couldn't do something different that will create the craze for them towards the people. Suddenly, the Batt brothers got some companion at their school campus; that was Mick Kern the bassist of Japan and Richard Barbairi as Keyboardist. And those four teenage boys formed a band. Usually they performed with Sylvain's two songs those were written and composed by the Sylvain himself. After performing on such local stages suddenly they got a big floor to explore their talents. And even they didn't have any fixed name at that initial stage, so they started the performance with the name of Japan.
Though according to Sylvain, He had some other choices as the name of the band, but as he didn't get much time to concentrate on names rather than music, so they fixed on that name in that particular program. And that show became a huge hit in mid 70's era. After getting the huge response, finally they fixed the name Japan as their brand name. And they started to rock the stage with a bunch of romantic songs with fine tune and awesome lyrics.
After performing several shows the team Japan signed a contract under Hansa-Ariola. Therefore, there were no chances to look at their back for them and Japan started to become a hot favorite rock band of the country itself. More or less, they were released three albums under the banner of Hansa. In which of them, their first released was "Adolescent Sex" in 1978. That album became the most popular in all the young stars of that era. So that the album "Adolescent sex" took place in top 30 hit songs of that year. After their first album, they started planning to release their second album. With the figure of "Obscure Alternatives" under the same banner of Hansa along with the Ray's singer. Those had produced the album respectively.
After releasing the album, two songs in that album "Deviations" and "Sometimes I feel so low" got the opportunity to be released as worldwide basis and got the recognition after those released too. Therefore Band Japan got the recognition from worldwide and became the most popular romantic band of all over the world at late 70's era. Then they started to release one by one, their other albums like "quite a life", "Gentleman Takes Polaroid", and "Tin drum", respectively.
But after releasing their fourth and last album of the 80's era, Japan started too scattered in between their members. First of all, an ego clashed took place between Sylvain and kern for their creation. Secondly, Yuka Fuji a photographer by profession came into the middle of Kern and Sylvain's clash. Granting to the source, Yuka was an ex-girlfriend of Kern so she created an embarrassing situation for Kern to take office in the Band's indoor program after her acceptance in band as Sylvain's girl friend.
The 'Fujii' put so many impacts on Sylvain, so he was unable to leave Fujii with any cost. So Sylvain decided to leave the band and settled a solo career for him. So the Japan broke down while it was at their high pick-up. Though they were formed again in 1991, but that time they performed under another name instead of Japan. The new name of the Japan was "Rain tree crow," which were recorded and marketed by Virgin records globally.
