Types of masterbatches and their uses in plastic industry
Posted: Apr 04, 2019
Masterbatches have become a key part to the plastic industry. Their usages have consistently been growing in recent times due to their properties and abilities to create difference to end products. They not only add colour to products but are also responsible for enhancing performances as well. More importantly, masterbatches are a value addition to a variety of processes that form the bone of rubber and plastic industry. Their use helps companies improve the features of their products, which helps them deliver value to customers or end users.
Here are different types of masterbatches and their uses in the plastic industry –
- White Masterbatch
As the name suggest, the white masterbatches are extensively used to provide whiteness to plastic products. They are also responsible for the transparency and brightness to end products. Titanium dioxide makes some two third of the total ingredients of these masterbatches. The quality range of white masterbatch from India will also depend on the percentage of titanium dioxide in their total composition.
- Colour Masterbatches
They are responsible for adding colour to the final plastic or rubber products. Available in over 200 shades, colour masterbatches can also add thermal stability and light fastness to end products. They are mostly used in blow molding of bottles, insulation of cables and also in injection molding of items for household use. The best thing, they can be chosen in any colour for products.
- Additive Masterbatches
These masterbatches are primarily used to prevent products from UV rays and help sustain their properties. Manufacturers can also use them to minimize the weight and resin use of final products. Different varieties are available with additive masterbatches with each having special properties to enhance the quality of final products.
- UV Masterbatches
These masterbatches are generally used for products that are exposed to sunlight and remain open in longer period. Filled with UV stabilizer, they can stop the degradation of end products. More so, the use of UV masterbatches is quite common for preventing discoloration, stabilizing the mechanical strength & elongation of products and also for providing strength to products so that they can bear any weather condition easily.
- Black Masterbatches
As the name implies, these masterbatches are predominantly used as black pigment in various plastic applications. They are suitable for a variety of high-stake processes including blow molding, injection molding, HDPE pipes and mono filaments. When you get quality black masterbatch from India, it will have half the black component as composition which makes it suitable for UV protection. They are also preferred for their conductivity, jetness and high surface areas.
- Antioxidant Masterbatches
They are very important masterbatches and used when polymers have to be protected from degradation at high temperatures. They also have properties to keep intact the mechanical and gloss properties of end products. Plastic manufacturers rely on these masterbatches to add life and value to their products. Apart from uses in blow molding and injection molding, they are also used in cables, pipes, films, tapes etc. With these masterbatches, companies are able to deliver quality products to end users.
Summary
The use of masterbatches is growing by the day and companies in the plastic industry are benefiting a great deal. When right quality masterbatches are procured, it ensures a boost to the look and performance of end products. This is how businesses grow and realize their true potential.
