You have seen that small white box that shows up when you check out your cart every time you go shopping. The box asks for a discount code, offer code, gift code, promo code, source code, and other names. Regardless of how the online store calls it, these are actually online coupon codes, and they have the potential to save you money if you know how to use them wisely.

What is a coupon code?

Coupon codes mostly come in the form of a mix of letters and numbers and are usually in all caps. They can be random (WT45J6Y), but sometimes they actually spell out actual words (FREESHIP80). These codes can give a certain discount whether it may be a percentage off the total or a fixed dollar amount off the total price. Some coupons also offer discounted or free shipping. These coupons can be used on selected items in an online store, and sometimes some require a minimum amount of purchase to be able to be used.

How to use a coupon code

Once you have a coupon code, all you have to do is enter the code in the white code box when you check out your items. For instance, when you are purchasing car parts online, all you have to do is enter the PartsGeek promo codes, and your discount will reflect on the total price after you enter the code. The key is not to place the order before you have entered the code in order to make sure that the code is applied.

Exclusions and restrictions

Although some coupon codes seem to be general in nature, there are actually some exclusions that you and restrictions that you must understand. For instance, some stores do not allow you to use a discount store gift card with your coupon at the same time, and some stores do not allow you to use coupons on items that are already on sale. Another example is that you can not use your free shipping coupons for items that are heavy or oversized. Stores can also cancel codes before their expiration date especially when they run out of supply.

Getting your coupons

These codes are available through their own website, other coupon websites, and even in newsletters. Some online stores like GetYourCouponCodes have a list of coupon codes on their home page which is very convenient. A general search by keying in "coupons" in your search engine can also lead you to a list of websites that offers coupons and deals from online stores. Another way to get coupons and discounts is to sign up for the online store’s newsletter. You can also check the store’s social media accounts for any signs of discounts or freebies.
