Belviq and Qsymia: FDA Approved Drugs for Obesity
Posted: Jun 14, 2014
Obesity is one of the main health problems affecting millions of people all over the world today. According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than a third of adults in the US are suffering from obesity. In response, several drugs are being tested to help with the efforts of reversing the condition.
New Weight Loss Drugs: QysmiaandBelviq
Although, new medicines and doctor weight loss programs are being developed by various companies and physicians, only a few are being approved due to potential health risks. The good news is that there are 2 new drugs that were approved by the US Food and Drug Administration called Qsymia and Belviq.
These two are specifically approved by the FDA for doctor-supervised weight loss programs. This means that not anyone can just use the medicine to lose weight. Depending on the patient’s health conditions, the doctor’s advice and the patient’s BMI, doctors will evaluate if a patient should take these drugs.
Qysmia
Qsymia is a combination of 2 drugs. One is the drug topiramate, usually used as medication for migraines and seizures. The other is phentermine, which is a popular appetite-suppressant. Topiramate has been discovered to increase the burning of calories, while also making food less appealing and increasing the full feeling.
However, not all people suffering from obesity can take Qsymia. Obese people with glaucoma, an overactive thyroid, and allergies to its main components (topiramate and phentermine) cannot take this drug. Also, people who are taking the antidepressant MAOI cannot take Qsymia for their weight loss medical program.
Based on clinical trials, people who have been taking Qsymia for almost a year, were able to lose about 9% of their weightcompared to those taking a placebo. More than 70% of the people who were taking Qsymia successfully, lost more than 5% of their body weight.
Belviq
It is not clear or fully revealed yet how Belviq really works, but according to its manufacturer, Belviq works by activating a particular chemical "switch" in the brain to increase levels of serotonin. However, Belviq is not recommended for people taking medications for migraine, anxiety, depression, and thought disorders. Men with a deformed penis, multiple myeloma, laukemiaor sickle cell anemia are not also qualified to take this drug.
Based on clinical trials, more than 47% of the people taking Belviq lost more than 5% of body weight as well.
Proper Use for Weight Loss
Both drugs are not recommended for pregnant women. Qsymia and Belviq are both approved by the US FDA, but strict regulations are still being imposed on the specific usage of these drugs for safety. They can have the potential for addiction in people, so are under the category of a controlled substance.
