Buddhism is an ancient and lovely culture that propagates harmony and peace among all beings and teaches humans to live as one with nature. The Sanskrit chant of om mani padme hum is associated with the bodhisattva Avalokite?vara whose name literally means the Lord who looks down. He is believed to have taken a vow to help all beings achieve nirvana and is also said to have delayed his own attainment of nirvana in a bid to help others. This bodhisattva is believed to embody compassion and is also known to hear the cries of help of the needy and is known to work to help the people who need him in a tireless manner. Often depicted as both male and female, Avalokite?vara embodies six qualities including compassion, kindness and courage and is also popularly depicted in numerous forms. Modern studies have indicated this bodhisattva to have risen from forms of both Hindu and Buddhist deities.

Om mani padme hum is a chant that embodies a lot of meaning and encompasses virtuous thoughts that helps in adding value to prayers. This is believed to be a powerful mantra and can be chanted or written down and helps in bringing energy and value to your prayers. Mani padme, the middle part of the mantra is meant to mean jewel in the lotus and the bodhisattva is often depicted in paintings to be seated on a lotus or is surrounded by numerous lotus petals. The chant is also believed to purify beings and helps them develop virtuous values that obliterate their negative counterparts. Paintings showcasing this mantra are thus useful in bringing positive thoughts and values into your home and help in driving away or keeping under control negative feelings. Lotus also symbolizes wisdom and its presence is believed to bring and inculcate knowledge when showcased at home.

The Dalai Lama has further explained the meaning of the chant om mani padme hum and indicated that by following an indivisible path of wisdom and method being can transform their impure body, speech and mind into an exalted one. He also states the intent for becoming exalted or for being on the path of exaltation must be altruistic in order for the chant to be effective and true. Resonance created by the harmonic sound created while chanting this mantra helps in blocking out negative energy and similarly paintings of this chant help in driving away negative thoughts and ideas. The vibration created by the phonetic strength of uttering this chant is visible on all beings and is not believed to be restricted to humans alone. Thus the deity Avalokite?vara has a rich history and is believed by some to be the vehicle to reach the supreme being.
