Sensors suggest that the devices are meant to detect different changing conditions both internally and externally. A sensor generally transforms the physical changes to signals which are measured in a graphical form. Sensors have been used extensively in objects such as touch-sensitive screens in phones, laptops, and others, proximity sensors, speedometers, and others. Additionally, sensors have been used widely in automobiles to enhance the performance, and efficiency of a vehicle. Automotive sensors provide data for vehicle functions control, adaptation and response to enhance safety, convenience, and efficiency for passengers. All these factors have led to an augmented demand for automotive sensors in the market. The global market for automotive sensor market includes a few emerging players such as Denso Corp, Autoliv Inc., Bourns Inc., Honeywell International Inc., Delphi Automotive Plc., Elmos Semiconductor AG, General Electric Co., Robert Bosch GmbH, Continental AG, and Velodyne Lidar, among others.

Since the last decade, it has been observed that the automobiles have been transformed from manual to advanced driverless smart cars with the help of sensors and autopilot systems. This was driven mainly by rapid advancement in intelligent sensor technology and its implementation. Companies such as Mercedes - Benz, Volvo, Toyota and Google Inc. are developing smart cars with advanced features to develop high-quality smart cars that provide more secured driving with comfort.

The sensors play the role of a monitor, detector, and recorder for human activities. It monitors different physical properties, including pressure, temperature, sound level, vibration, and fluid and gas flow rate. The need for these sensors has increased due to increased efficiency and enhanced performance of the automobiles. The developments in technology have led sensors to be an integral part of the automotive system. Researchers are still working on the research and developments to make passengers’ ride easier and more comfortable.

The different smart features have been added in the present era automotive that include airbags, safety belt, bumper shocks, auto-braking, blind spot detection, and lane-departure alerts, which ensure safety for passengers. These features are vital for self-driven automotive to communicate with the environment and move safely. Smart sensors are provided with data collection and self-diagnostic features to ensure increased reliability, compatibility and control.

A few of the key sensors used for automotive safety include radars, ultrasonic and vision based sensors. Additionally, LiDAR has been used which is the most reliable and widely used sensor system for a smooth navigation purpose as per the reports by Ford Fusion hybrid autonomous research. Smart cars rely on the ecosystem's interconnection and the ability to communicate in real time with other vehicle’s sensors and microprocessors. Comprehensive data analytics and modeling tools are required for the sensors to collect, process, transmit and interpret large numbers of data to and from various third-party systems. Machinery learning and predictive models assist smart cars to anticipate the future and prevent forthcoming crashes or road accidents.
