Human services are services directed towards assisting people, families, groups or communities to live a better life and to function effectively in all aspects of life. Human service as a discipline supplements and complements other traditional professionals such as health and education.

The article updates the recommended direction for mental health services in relation to the disparities in mental health care for Latinos by the department of health and human services. The authors review five research projects regarding the mental health of Latinos. The authors use Roglar and Cortes’s framework of pathways to care in the study of Latinos with schizophrenia. Lopez et al. (2012) draws the research as per the recognition of illness, their association with the illness and social networks. They also illustrate pathways such as addressing the limited mental health literacy, emphasizing on family support for mentally and encouraging family and family-based treatments. They conclude that it is possible to reduce and finally eliminate disparities in mental health care by implementing interventions across several pathways.

Ghandour et al. carried out a study to compare the estimate of children with special health care needs and those who have none at two time periods for national health objectives similar to the healthy people 2010 LHIs. The researchers obtained data from 2003 and 2007 national surveys of children’s health. They used seven items that are physical activity, household tobacco use, obesity, current insurance, personal health care provider past year emergency department and past-month depressive symptoms. They found out that children with special health care needs fared badly as compared to those with no special health care needs. The findings were in respect to obesity, physical inactivity, household tobacco exposure, emergency department visits and depressive symptomology. But they fared better than their counterparts in having personal heath provider and current insurance. These findings indicated that there were significant disparities fro key PHIs between children with and those without special health care needs. According to the author the analysis illustrates how population-based initiatives can be useful in tackling health challenges in vulnerable populations.
