Thinking of trying a meal replacement diet? These types of diets are very popular - especially when people want to lose weight extra fast.

But these plans can also carry risks - and can even end up damaging your health.

Here's a few things you need to know if you're thinking about trying a meal replacement diet.

First of all what exactly is this type of diet?

A meal replacement plan is when you substitute or replace a meal - usually with a protein bar or a shake. The more meals you replace, the most weight you lose.

Popular examples of these plans include Medifast, Slimfast, the Cookie diet and Wonderslim. Each plan is a bit different from the next but the basic idea is that you're replacing your regular meals with an alternative.

The benefit of these diets is that you can lose weight very fast - up to 5 pounds a week. This is faster than the standard diet which will only target about 2 - 3 pounds a week.

The second benefit is that, because you're losing faster and will reach your goal faster, you don't have to be on the diet so long.

The third benefit is that, compared to many other diets, these plans are much more affordable. For example, Medifast is currently about $11 a day (although you do add in your own "lean and green" meal at night).

So those are some benefits - what about the risks?

Well, there are a few of these diets (not all - but a few) that are not balanced and can be dangerous. You may not get the wide range of nutrients that your body needs to lose weight safely.

They will strip your body of nutrients that you need and can end up causing all sorts of health problems like low iron, low magnesium and more.

You need to look for a plan that gives you lots of variety - because you should not be eating the same thing every day over more than 2 days. It's not healthy or natural.

Also, some plans are just plain boring. They only give you bars and shakes. And that leads to diet monotony - which leads to boredom - which lead to cheating and binge-eating.

You need something more than shakes and bars - especially if you'll be on the diet for more than a week.

Plans like Medifast and Wonderslim for example are two of the best because they give you bars and shakes - plus soups, chilis, oatmeals, brownies, eggs, pastas, ice cream, pretzels and much more.

This kind of variety will help you stick to the plan - and give you the range of different nutrients that you need to stay healthy.

So while meal replacement diets do have some major benefits - there are real risks that you should know before trying one.

Stay away from the risky plans by making sure they give you a wide variety of eating options and always, always listen to your body!
