In just one decade, a large number of Erbil construction and infrastructure projects have transformed the capital of Kurdistan from a medium-sized country town to the fourth largest city in Iraq and the leading city in the Kurdish area of northern Iraq. With a population of nearly 1.5 million people, today’s Erbil is a far cry from the past when misery and despair prevailed.

Until 2003 the Kurdistan region in northern Iraq had been plagued with wars and violence which had devastated the region. Most of the towns and villages were in ruins, people kept leaving their hometowns to seek refuge in safer areas or neighboring countries in the Middle East, or even Europe, while the economy of the region was shattered.

After the collapse of the Saddam Hussein’s dictatorial regime, the Kurdistan region started taking advantage of the revenue from the exploitation of its rich oil and gas reserves in order to reconstruct the damaged towns and villages in the region. Today, more than 2/3 of the destroyed towns and villages in the area have been successfully reconstructed while a large number of the Kurdish Diaspora have already repatriated.

Attracting Investments and Foreign Professionals

At the same time, with the continuous efforts of the Kurdistan Regional Government to preserve security and implement the 2006 Investment Law, Erbil has attracted approximately $16 billion in foreign and domestic investments in the last 8 years. More than half of these investments come from Turkey and Iran, but USA, UK, Italy and Germany are also present.

In addition to its ever-growing gas and oil sector which has been a pole of attraction for a multitude of international companies, the Erbil construction industry is the most prospering industry in Kurdistan and the one that has attracted a large number of Iraqi and international professionals who grabbed the opportunity for a new profitable career.

An Ever-Changing City

If you had visited Erbil 6 months ago and you visit it now, you will be able to see major changes, while some parts of the city look dramatically different. Where there was a building site before, today you can see a beautiful, luxury, gated city with large gardens, modern residential villas and upscale shopping and entertaining facilities.

These expensive compounds have been built on the outskirts of the old city and they have become the ideal residential choice for thousands of international expatriates who have come to the city with their families. Some of them are: the English Village, the American Village, Ankawa, the Naz City, the Pank City, the Befrin Villas, and many more.

The city of Erbil keeps changing with towering skyscrapers dominating its skyline, while the outskirts of the city have almost reached the mountains in the north. Erbil construction projects include large office and business premises, luxury showrooms, top-notch restaurants, and several western-type shopping malls where you can find the majority of the most popular brands along with various entertainment facilities. Moreover, the city is dotted with a large number of hotels, among which the 5-star Rotana, Dedeman, and Divan Hotels.

8th Erbil Construction and Building Exhibition

Because the construction industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in Kurdistan, the annual Building Expo in Erbil attracts a large numbers of exhibitors and buyers. This year the exhibition is going to take place in the International Fairground of Erbil from 14th – 17th May 2014 and is expected to attract civil engineers, architects, contractors, local businessmen, construction companies, manufacturers of various building materials and machinery, garden and landscape specialists, as well as officials from the local authorities and the Ministry of Development.

The exhibition is the perfect opportunity for international companies to expand their business in Kurdistan, where construction is a rapidly developing and highly profitable sector. It is also a great opportunity for everyone who is involved in construction to acquaint themselves with new and innovative building products and technologies, gain knowledge and insights on the most cost-effective solutions and procedures, and get expert advice for their ongoing or future projects.

Because of the significant increase in its population, Erbil construction business is expected to flourish in the years to come. Also, the need for additional infrastructure, municipal buildings, hospitals, schools and universities will further increase the demand for reliable construction solutions.
