3 Simple Design Guidelines for Spotted Gum Flooring
Posted: May 04, 2019
It’s hard to ignore hardwood flooring in any space where it’s used, and many homeowners want that "wow factor" for their own homes. Spotted gum timber flooring has become a very popular choice in recent years because it’s locally sourced, beautiful and durable. However, when you use any timber flooring product, it’s important to keep these three simple design guidelines in mind.
1. Create a Colour Contrast
Whenever you decide to use a lighter coloured timber floor, it will have an artistic and contemporary feel. However, a darker coloured floor will look more sophisticated and elegant in any space where it’s used. Any shade of timber that you choose will have a dramatic effect on the room, and this is a great way to show off your style. How you contrast your floor colours and the other elements in the room is critical.
If you have a lighter floor go with darker walls and furnishings and the floor will give you an extra feeling of space. Don’t go too dark, punctuate with important features and the contrast will still be sufficiently emphasised without plunging the room into darkness. Go for lighter furniture that is simple and minimalistic in nature and pair it with soft furnishings with vibrant colours, such as deep purple and pumpkin orange.
Darker timber flooring hues can be paired with lighter walls and luxurious furniture. Make sure that your furniture is slightly darker or lighter than the floor or it will become lost in the room. To break things up, you can add vibrant touches of colour to your soft furnishing choices, such as deep reds, fuchsia tones, and lime green highlights. Cushions and throws are a great option, but lampshades and various planters can also work.
2. A Pale Bleached Floor
A bleached effect timber floor is a completely blank canvas for a spirited interior designer. Literally anything will go with this flooring choice, and it’s a great excuse to go wild and have fun. Try pairing solid dark oak furniture with deep red walls to get a very surprising bold contemporary appeal that will certainly impress visitors. Alternatively, you could paint the walls a pale sky blue, then add some white furniture and you have an instant beach home aesthetic.
3. Be Secure in Your Choices
It’s worth mentioning that this is your home and what you want in your home is entirely your decision. After all, you and your family will be residing in your design, so it’s important to like what you create. Although your choices may not meet a specific design criteria, they must meet your tastes and needs. As such, you can break or make any rules that you want to, and as long as you’re happy with the result, it will work for you. There is only a single caveat; if you’re installing spotted gum flooring for an imminent house sale, it’s a good idea to stick to conventional design thinking. A home that’s too individual is much harder to sell, and you could be waiting a while to find the right buyer that both "gets it" and is prepared to meet your price.
