Hard Sided vs. Inflatable Sport Fishing Boats

You have two basic choices in sport fishing boats: hard sided or inflatable. Both varieties have their good points and drawbacks. The most obvious difference between them is the materials used in construction. Hard sided fishing boats are made with hard material, such as fiberglass, aluminum or plastics. To transport hard sided vessels from your home to the water, you will need a trailer. An inflatable boat is filled with air and can be deflated when not in use. Most inflatables come with a carrying bag for travel. This feature makes them convenient.

Inflatable fishing boats are more stable than small hard sided vessels. You can stand up to reel in a fish without the fear of tipping the boat and landing in the lake. Rigid inflatable boats have a hard bottom covered with material. These are a bit more difficult to transport, but give added stability and comfort if you prefer standing. Rigid sport boats have a solid hull with space for storage. This gives the fisherman room to store fishing gear on the boat.

Best of all, the entire inflatable catamaran and sail kit fits into two bags for easy storage.

Small Portable Yacht Tender

This dinghy weighs just 25 lbs and takes only 8 minutes to inflate. This is a very lightweight inflatable boat which is easily launched by one person and one of the best choices in a portable yacht tender for a small sailing vessel. A wide beam and optional floorboards provide stability and support.

Multi-Purpose Dinghy

This is one of the best multi-purpose dinghies around. It makes a great 3-person yacht tender for a larger sail boat or can be used as a raft, fishing boat, diving platform or cruising dinghy. These inflatables weigh just 32 lbs without the floorboards and fold into a 2 foot long package when deflated.

Whitewater Raft/Rowing/Cruising Dinghy

This is the best dinghy in its category for activities such as whitewater rafting, river running and pleasure cruising. According to the manufacturer, this rugged 11’ inflatable boat rows easily and runs all day on a gallon of gas using a 4 hp motor. At 38 lbs, it is still lightweight enough to be launched by hand as a yacht tender on a larger sail boat.

The price of an inflatable boat is much lower than hard sided sport fishing vessels. The price difference depends on the size and model you choose. Although the ones you inflate are made to last, they won’t last as long as a hard sided sport boating model. Stay away from the cheaper brands because they have a shorter life span resulting from lower quality materials. With proper care, you will get years out of the one that inflates, but not nearly as long as a well maintained aluminum or fiberglass sports model.

Each fisherman has his own opinion about which type is better. Both styles of boats, rigid and inflatables, are great for sports fishing and recreation. Your personal preference is a major factor in your decision. Either way, a boat is an investment. You want to take your time and make the best choice, one you can live with for years to come.
