A reference list is a hallmark for the reliability, validity, and credibility of your essay. Therefore, skipping on it or having any error in it will definitely leave a negative effect on the overall grades of your economics essay.

To ensure that your hard work on that essay pays off, here are 3 easy ways that will help you write perfect and fault-free reference:

1. Curate data as you write an essay

MISTAKE: Often students are so engaged in structuring and writing an introduction, a body, and a conclusion for their essay that they forget to keep a note of sources they are referring to. Which increases their load when they write a reference list.

SOLUTION: It is suggested that students should maintain a separate list to keep a track of the resources as they write their essay. This list includes:

  • Surname(s) and initial(s) of the author,
  • The date when the data was published,
  • The title of the source text,
  • Title of the journal and volume number, if the source is a paper,
  • If it is taken from a book that has been edited then- the title of the book, the name of the editor(s), the publisher, and the place of publication (don’t confuse publisher with printer), and
  • Page number of journals and books.

Once you have a list ready, reference writing won’t be a tedious task to work upon.

EXAMPLE:

  • David (L.P)
  • 1999
  • Proficiency at work
  • Models of surpassing Performance
  • Brisbane
  • John Jacobs & Sons

2. Be aware of the reference style

PROBLEM: Students are often unclear about the reference style that their university approves of. Due to this, their grades suffer.

SOLUTION: You should contact your professor and ask about the reference style that is followed in the university and abide by the same. Some of the commonly used styles are:

  • APA
  • MLA
  • Chicago
  • Harvard
  • Vancouver

Each reference style has a particular set of rules that have to be followed as you write them.

EXAMPLE: APA style referencing of an imaginative journal source:

Caren, B. E., & Ubermich, K. V. (1993). Job postings and economical needs: A verbal analysis. Journal of Ecoworld, 78, 845-856.

3. Know the type of referencing

PROBLEM: Sometimes students think that adding a reference list is the only way to refer to a source. But, that is not the case. Instead, there are two ways to refer a source of the content that you incorporate in your essay i.e., in text citation and reference list.

SOLUTION: You should incorporate both of these references as you write your essay. As each leaves a different impact on your essay overall.

EXAMPLE:

In text citation- In a recent study, David and Cannon found that....

Reference list- David, L.P., Cannon, W.M. (1999). Proficiency at work. Models for surpassing performance. Brisbane: John Jacobs & Sons.

However, if you are taking help from online citation tools, sticking to these three ways will help you to be organized and precise as you operate these tools.

Following these three points while writing a reference list for your economics essay, will help you to increase the plausibility of it and will fetch you outstanding grades on the same. So, next time don’t forget to curate and create a proper reference list.
