Reasons Why Your Car's AC is not Working
Posted: May 10, 2019
It’s no fun when your air conditioner isn’t working while driving in the heat on the Gold Coast. But it is not only your discomfort; it can be a real safety issue during a Queensland heat wave. So go to a mechanic on the Gold Coast to have it fixed.
The most common air conditioner problems are:
- Leaking Refrigerant
This is most likely to happen at the condenser, as this is at the front of your vehicle and could be ruptured by stones or other objects hitting it while driving. Often the only way to fix a ruptured condenser is by replacing it.
Another area that’s susceptible to leaks is around the hose connections. Detecting just where the leak is can be very difficult, so usually, you need to take it to an auto air conditioner specialist.
- A blocked Condenser
The condenser’s job is to cool down the hot refrigerant gas after being compressed. It utilises the airflow coming in the front of the vehicle to blow through for cooling. In order for it to do this efficiently, it needs to be clear and clean, so check to make sure there are no leaves or other debris blocking it. This is best done with compressed air or when washing the car using water and a soft brush so you do not damage the fine cooling fins.
- Electrical Issues
Sometimes the fuses need replacing, after checking the appropriate fuse (check the owner’s handbook) take a good look at the wiring to see if any wires are broken as most of the controls are electric. Broken wires can be fixed or replaced, but usually it is best to have a qualified air conditioning service center go over the wiring as most of the electrics’ are hidden from view.
Faulty cooling fan
There is usually a cooling fan provided to ensure there is enough airflow to properly cool the refrigerant in the condenser. This is most important when traveling slowly, in traffic jams or stopped so there is little airflow. Broken or cracked fan blades need to be replaced and you need to check the fan belts to ensure they are tight and not worn.
- The compressor
The average working life of an auto air conditioner compressor is about 10 years; although you can expect a much longer working life from your unit if you use it more often and service it regularly.
It is recommended that you run the air conditioner at least once every two weeks, even in the winter as this lubricates the inside and keeps all the components fresh.
- The Cabin Filter
Many people overlook the cabin filter, it’s located just before the air outlet in the cab and should be checked regularly to help maintain steady airflow and reduce any possibility of cabin odours.
Have your auto air conditioner serviced long before the start of the hot season to avoid delays as many people suddenly find their conditioner is not working, after having it off over the cooler months.
All modern vehicles come with air conditioners, to maintain them in the best working condition they need to be used regularly and serviced least every two years by your local air conditioner mechanic on the Gold Coast.
