Five Questions you can ask during Front End Developer Job Interviews

When companies are hiring for technical jobs, they are still looking for reliable and passionate candidates with the right skills and the qualifications. So, front end developer interview questions can be a mix of technical and general topics. Usually, companies test technical skills by having candidates go through some sort of test. But it is crucial to ask the right questions related to their skills as well.

Here are some standard front end developer interview questions candidates can expect.

Question 1 – How do you approach a design challenge?

Answer – See if the candidates use this question to display their ability to solve complex challenges when working on projects. Do they provide real examples to display their ability to overcome challenges without compromising or delaying work on a project?

Question 2 – What are some of the technical and design blogs you follow?

Answer – With this question, you can gauge the candidates’ knowledge of the web design field and if they keep abreast with the current trends and challenges of the profession.

Ask them follow-up questions on it when they answer this question to find out if they actually read the technical blogs they mention. Similarly, you can ask them about their favorite book authored by a well-known personality in the tech or the design world. The right candidates will be confident in answering this question as they will make sure to keep up with industry news.

Question 3 – Can you talk to me about your least favorite website design and what you don’t like about it?

Answer – With this question, you can become know more about the candidates’ knowledge of the design problems facing the industry.

See if the candidates utilize their response to showcase to you their understanding of the design challenges and ways to overcome them. Do they only give an example of a website design they don’t like or also talk about solution to improve it?

You can also ask follow-up question about their favorite application or website and why they like it.

Question 4 – Do you like working on responsive web designs?

Answer – Responsive website designs are getting popular by the day as more and more people are now online on their mobile devices or smartphones.

Most probably the candidates’ answer would be in the affirmative. See if they tell you about the examples of projects they have worked on where responsive design was used.

If by chance their response in the negative then they should be prepared to really back it up with a solid explanation without sounding apologetic.

Question 5 - What is your greatest strength as a designer?

Answer – The right candidate won’t be shy when responding to this question. With this question, you can find out about the design strength of the candidates’ and gauge their usefulness for the company.

Their response can be creativity, the ability to solve complex design issues, or anything else. But they should be able to support their response with real examples.
