1. First, make sure you are searching in the right area to begin with. You want to identify your skills sets and talents and search for jobs that correspond to them. Gone are the days where you can have a so-so resume and be guaranteed to get hired based purely on "having a college degree" or "having a good referral." The most savvy job seekers today modify and update their resume for each job posting. There are many services out there that will help you proof read or suggest other changes to your resume if you haven’t done so in a long time or are not confident in doing it yourself. Standing out from the crowd is the highest priority and having a great resume is a key to doing that.
2. Preparing well for your interview is another very important thing. Thanks to all of the information available via the internet, search for some common interview questions and the best answers to those questions. You will need to modify the answers to fit you and the job you are applying for.

Make sure to rehearse your answers because you will not be able to just sit in the interview and read the answers word-for-word from your notes (at least, you won’t be able to do that and expect to get hired!).
