After decades of settling for stodgy, safe, ‘more of the same’ options, the world of engagement jewellery has, in recent years, experienced a considerable shift in paradigm. What at one time was expected to be ‘traditional’ became all about uniqueness, and brides and grooms were suddenly allowed to let their personality shine through on their choice of engagement jewellery.

A vintage engagement ring, for example, became the mark of a girl who is as one of a kind as the ring she wears. These days many women are interested in old world styles because they want a ring design that none of their friends have. When looking for vintage engagement rings it is the Art Deco pieces that are somewhat easier to find than some other vintage styles, mainly because engagement rings became more popular during this time.

The Art Deco period is defined by World War I, the glam of the Roaring Twenties and Prohibition, but also the decline of the western world into the Great Depression. This was a time of a lot of firsts as well and it was during this time that white gold was first introduced and engagement rings became a popular tradition. This style of ring is very intricate and the filigree of many of the bands is quite exquisite being very hard to recreate. This is the perfect ring for a girl who truly wants a ring that is a treasure.

Many of the art deco vintage engagement rings also have a heart integrated in one way or another. There could be tiny diamonds in the shape of a heart or a heart cut, for example, and this adds some romance to the piece. Many of the diamonds are also outlined with bold geometric shapes that were inspired by the Cubist art movement. If your bride is a nature lover, she might also enjoy some of the leaf, flower or lace patterns that adorn many of the Art Deco rings.

The focus of an Art Deco ring is not carat size or price, but instead concentrates on the wondrous detail of the design. This is not to say that these rings are cheap though. As the designs take so much work, and of course many of them are antiques too, the prices will reflect that.

The Art Deco design period is known as the most creative time for jewellery designers, and the engagement rings are absolutely stunning. After the muted styles synonymous with WWI, the style and elegance of Art Deco took the design world by storm, and still remains a leading style today. There is a certain wild but feminine style to these rings that more creative and adventurous women will adore.
