Grout Cleaning Tips
Posted: Jun 20, 2014
Preparation. As you know, just like everything else, tiles also gather lots of dust, if you don't clean them regularly. And quite often the dust accumulates in the grouts, because they are difficult to reach and we clean it quite rarely. But when you have made the decision to clean grout, you'll have to go all the way. This is why you should use a dry broom or a mop to wipe the area across the floor tiles. If you're trying to clean your walls, you should use a soft and dry cloth to wipe the wall tiles. This will get rid of any dust that has been accumulating with time, giving you better access to the grout you're actually trying to clean. After all the tiles are wiped from all the excess dust and other particles, you can proceed to the whole grout cleaning process.
Start cleaning. After everything is ready and prepared for cleaning, it's time to apply the detergent. Apply the cleaning solution you chose to the grout, and make sure all the areas you have to clean are well covered by the solution. Some people prefer the easy way and choose hard chemical cleaning solutions, which harm the environment and endanger the nature. And some people prefer to be less narrow minded and use some kind of natural or nature friendly tile cleaners, which are less corrosive and less toxic, but still quite efficient. When you use certain tile cleaning solutions, you may find out that you will have to apply the solution a few times as it soaks in. But be careful, because some people go a little over their heads and put too much detergent. The goal here is not to saturate the floor, but to make sure the crevices are well covered, so the cleaning can have the same power for all the areas of your house.
Leave the tile cleaner working for about 30 minutes and no more than an hour. This time is enough to loosen all kinds of stains, which will make them easier to scrub and lift off.
Tools. Use a hard-bristled brush to scrub the tile grout until it gets clean. The different DIY stores sell brushes specially dedicated to cleaning grout, but you will realise with time that the old toothbrush will do the same job for less money. Just make sure you won't need the toothbrush later, because there won't be any turning back once you use it for cleaning grout!
Wipe. Once you're done with the hard part, just rinse the floor or the wall with some clean and cool water, and then dry it with a soft cloth. If there are stubborn stains, which won't come off the first time, you will probably have to repeat the entire process to see any positive results.
