Stomach cancer also referred to as gastric cancer is considered to be a buildup of the abnormal cells which start forming a mass part in the stomach of a person. According to the reports of the World Health Organization, 723,000 cancer-related deaths are caused by stomach cancer alone. This makes this kind of cancer the fifth most common cancer in the world.

A majority of people who get diagnosed with stomach cancer wither have metastasis or develop the same eventually. Metastasis occurs when cancer starts spreading from the area in which it has been first developed. Stomach cancer treatment is a must after the problem has been diagnosed in the body.

Around 90-95 percent of all the stomach cancers are considered to be a type referred to as adenocarcinoma of the stomach. In this particular kind of stomach cancer, cancer develops from the cells which form the mucosa which is known to be the most superficial lining of the stomach responsible for producing mucus.

Symptoms of stomach cancer:

Most of the times, people suffering from stomach cancer do not experience any kind of symptoms at all. This cause could also be a different medical condition apart from cancer.

  2. Vomiting blood or having blood in the stool
  3. Weight loss that is unexplained.

Causes of stomach cancer:

According to the scientists, the exact cause of cancer cannot be figured out as there is nothing specific which starts the growth of cancer cells in the stomach of a person. However, there are a few things as well as habits which surely tend to raise the risk of developing stomach cancer in the body. One of such things is considered to be an infection with a common bacteria known as H. pylori that causes ulcers. Apart from this, inflammation in the gut known as gastritis, a particular kind of long-lasting anemia known as pernicious anemia as well as growths in the stomach known as polyps are also known to be increasing the chances of developing stomach cancer in the body.

Other things that play a role in increasing the risk of stomach cancer include the following:

  1. Being obese or overweight
  2. Smoking
  3. A diet that is high in salty, pickled or smoked foods
  4. Stomach surgery for an ulcer
  5. Certain genes
  6. Type-A blood
  7. Epstein-Barr virus infection
  8. Exposure to asbestos
  9. Working in metal, coal, timber or rubber industries.
