Considerations When Planning a Bathroom Remodel

If you’re looking at redoing your bathroom this year, you’ll find that bathroom trends have shifted away from what we were seeing five years ago.

Between looking at bathroom tile ideas to new cabinetry, there’s a lot of undiscovered potential in all of our bathroom spaces. Sometimes a simple coat of paint can freshen an area up to where you’re satisfied, but that’s not always the case.

For us, we did a major gut of old bathroom, as it was full of old vinyl from the seventies and a toilet that I’m sure has never been replaced. Keep in mind, the benefits for redoing your bathroom go beyond the want for having the latest style – remodeling your bathroom can save you money in the long run.

Here I wanted to talk about some of the things you should think about before remodeling your bathroom. While I’m not saying this is the right choice for everyone, you may find that a lot of my points resonate with you. If that’s the case, give it some serious consideration.

1. Light fixtures

Nowadays they are coming out with more and more affordable options regarding lighting. Switching out your light fixtures is typically fairly cheap, so there’s no reason to make the simple switch to something more energy efficient. Consider something with recessed light fixtures, as this can help brighten the room up.

2. Plumbing

Your drains are probably pretty gross, especially if they’re old. Getting the drains replaced with something larger and the toilet replaced with something more effecieint are worth serious consideration.

3. Flooring

Flooring can be one of the most expensive parts of your bathroom remodel – so definitely consider carefully. Tile is the most popular choice when it comes to your bathroom flooring – and it’s easy to see why. Tile holds up considerably better than most other types of flooring when it comes to things like water damage. Some people choose to tile the walls too, but this gets expensive fast. If you love the nice look of tile, but don’t love the price; consider putting accent tiles up on some of the wall – but not all of it. That’ll keep the cost down while having it still look nice.

4. Cabinetry

Cabinetry is a tricky thing when it comes to redoing your bathroom. You definitely want what you have to look nice and not too crowded, but you also need something that won’t take up a ton of space. Consider grabbing a recessed medicine cabinet. This can save you at least a few inches, and you’ll still (probably) have the room you need.

5. Shower

Having a window in your shower can feel questionable, depending on how you do it. It can be a great addition that can let in a little more natural light while you’re showering. Make sure you get something that has frosted glass or some other way to make it more private.

Regardless of what you decide to get refinished in your bathroom, I’m sure even a little touch up will make you happy. Just make sure and give consideration to these little tips, and you’ll be on your way!
