Estnoc.ee: What is VPS?
Posted: May 25, 2019
VPS stands for Virtual server hosting and is therefore a virtual server. Unlike a metal device in a room, a VPS is not a tangible piece of hardware. It is a form of web hosting that technically includes both dedicated and shared hosting.
Shared hosting is a cheap way of hosting where you share server space with others. If you have a website with a lot of traffic or if you have special requirements for a server, then you need a dedicated (= exclusive) server. That costs more. With VPS you have all the benefits of a dedicated server, but the costs are clearly lower than with dedicated hosting.
How does VPS hosting work?
You can compare VPS with running side by side different operating systems (Windows, Linux) on one computer. In the same way at VPS a single physical server is equipped with many virtual servers that are independent of each other. Each virtual server works completely independently of the other servers. If one of the virtual servers goes down, this has no effect on the other virtual servers.
The benefits of VPS hosting
Benefit from the lower costs of shared hosting while you have complete control that a dedicated server offers. Other benefits:
- Privacy; because you do not share your operating system with others, others do not have access to your
Customized files; because your operating system and all applications such as PHP, SQL, etc., are exclusive to your website, you can make them completely customized for your application.
- check; if you want to install applications and you have to restart your system, you can do so at any time without bothering others.
- Dedicated; on your VPS server, the entire RAM is exclusively for your website and everything that goes with it.
- Scalable; if your website grows and you need more applications, you can grow VPS without any problems by adjusting your hosting plan.
What to pay attention to with VPS hosting
So there are clear advantages to VPS hosting, but as a user you have to pay attention that you do get the necessary support. When purchasing your VPS, make sure that the provider offers sufficient memory and data space to accommodate any peaks in the use of your website. This differs per provider and comparing VPS hosting is therefore wise. It is also good to ask the provider how many Virtual server hosting are used per physical server; if there are very many, this can also lead to problems.
Most forms of VPS hosting mean that you must have some technical knowledge yourself. For example, you are generally responsible for monitoring and maintenance of the server and installing updates. Most providers also offer Managed VPS in different degrees, naturally at extra costs.
Cloud-based VPS hosting
The newest form of VPS hosting is via the cloud; that is, your virtual server is not on one physical server, but uses a large cluster of servers with much larger resources. With that there are hardly any physical limits to what the serves can handle. Even if you have to deal with peak traffic, there will be no problems with cloud-based VPS.
