India has the second largest army in the world with a total of 1,400,000 active personnel. Though protecting the populace is considered the greatest valour, numerous stereotypes stop women from joining the armed forces. Being a soldier comes with its own expense; opposed to the common beliefs a cadet should be both physically and mentally strong. Along with the educational eligibility you need the endurance to survive the long training. The perks of becoming an army servant are endless.

If you are hesitating to choose a career in the army just because of your womanhood, here are seven reasons to cheer you up -

Though working in equal capacity, men earn more than women in the same position. But, this is not the case in the army, both men and women who hold the same posts earn equal salaries.

Participate in Combat - The women were allowed to enter the armed forces only after a lawyer-turned-army-aspirant Priya Jhingan in 1992 wrote a letter to the General Sunith Francis Rodrigues - the then army chief. Though the number of women in the army is still low approximately 34%, a number of norms have been passed for providing equal opportunities to the female cadets. Now women can participate in the combat, fly fighter and do a lot more.

Healthcare - Don’t fret at the thought of a battlefield, for girls who are into medical studies, there is another way out. A staff of army women takes care of the ill and wounded soldiers. You can serve the army as a nurse or doctor in the medical ward.

Continuing Studies - Various programs are run by the Indian army to enhance the literacy skills of the cadets. If you wish to complete studies, the door is always open. Are you an undergraduate or a graduate? You can continue with a higher degree!

Leading the Troops - A leader is always revered by the team members no matter which profession you belong to. In the army the scale is grandeur. The respect you earn as a female cadet commanding your contingent is the best feeling in the world. It teaches you countless lessons in life. Women officers have been highly successful both on and off the field bagging them awards and honours from the government. Punita Arora, Mitali Madhumita, Divya Ajith Kumar and Nivedita Choudhary are the true gems for the country.

Pension - Last but not least, the army is the only service that provides pensions and several other military benefits to women officers.
