Fire installation tips
Posted: Jun 04, 2019
There's a lot to consider when it comes to building a home or any other complex structure to ensure the safety of all those who live inside. Questions that arise in one's mind are;• Is our construction fireproof?
- Will we use a firmestop product?
Fire prevention is one of the major issues that should be addressed due to the increased risk of accidental house and apartment fires from faulty wiring, irresponsible smokers, or cooking disasters. The fire penetration sealing is used to compartmentalize the building thoroughly to restrict the spread of fire. Seal systems for fire penetration are a highly effective form of passive fire protection.
Firestop sealants are used in a fire resistance wall to seal the opening joints, and it is a passive fire protection system made up of different components. There are a number of things to consider when selecting a fireplace. Fire-resistant sealant is used in highly moving joints or between dissimilar substrates where they are formed, such as steel and masonry.
The following is a guide to the dos and don'ts when using a firestop sealant ;
1. FIRST REGULATIONS OR THE NEC NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE
The NEC requires vertical installation of all metallic conduits within fire barriers. While 50% must be filled with a fire stop solution such as firestop putty, firestop sealant, or fire dam caulk, the duct sleeve must be filled with the wiring up to another 50% of its capacity. In addition, a backup should be introduced to the installation for the intumescent material to expand against when exposed to heat. If the installation of wires or cables is done without a metallic mechanical sleeve, it will be a violation of fire code. Other options include NEC approved systems, consisting of the right materials and installation guidelines.
2. FIRE INSTALLATION STATES
If one or a worker in the company installs firestop for a large building application, there are few tips that can be followed to help the process run smoother. Those are;
a. To complete the task of installing the firestop, one company should set up a standard operating procedure and should be reviewed regularly.
b. One should follow all the manufacturer's instructions when doing a firestop procedure. If a fire outbreak occurs and the manufacturer's standards have not been met, then the firestop will be ineffective.
c. Make sure your building complies with enforced fire codes and you should always contact a local building inspector or fire marshal as well.
d. A metallic sleeve system should always be used to penetrate horizontal and vertical fire barriers.
e. A nationally recognized facility should ensure that all firestop products are approved and tested.
f. Use indelible ink within the fire barrier to record the date, company name, and number of cables for any firestop installation. By using a camera, one can take a photo of one's work. If another company changes its setup or breaches the fire code, it will give you a record and documentation that will protect you from any lawsuits.
g. Evite anything that violates the fire code, such as avoid using fire barriers to run any new wiring or cables. In some cases, one may be held responsible by a building inspector for these violations.
h. If you exceed the recommended limits, avoid caulking around the cables. The minimum depth of thickness may be affected by the area to be packed.
i. One should avoid exceeding the sleeve's recommended filling capacity. Most fire products will expand if exposed to heat to block the affected areas.
j. One should remember to make sure that the drilled hole is slightly larger than the sleeve in order to create a better fit for conduits.
These tips are only basic guidelines; however, it should be remembered that sealants or materials should always be applied as per the manufacturers ' instructions.
Underwriters ' laboratories or UL develop a coding system for fire products. Many publish the UL information relating to the specific product and installation due to the vast fire-stop products manufacturers that are available on the market.
The article illuminates one with the useful tips for fire stop installation. There is also a list of doses and don't use the firestop sealants as guidelines.
When installing fire products in any application on the job site, when a fire outbreak occurs, it is important to consider everything to ensure that the installation works effectively. One can ensure that their construction is fireproof throughout the year, from buying the right product to correctly installing it. Many people are still confused about how sealants for firestop work.
