Just like any other thing, an AC generator has its own advantage and disadvantage. However, they have a higher level of insulation. AC generator is mostly relied on in commercial areas since they provide a wide range of electrical appliances and pieces of equipment. Its electrical charges move through a medium and its direction movement vary with time. This variation cannot be compared to DC Motors (Gleichstrommotoren) since they use a single direction movement.

AC Generator Basics

We can define the AC generator as a type of electromagnetic, which is responsible for converting his mechanical energy into electrical power, used in electromagnetic induction applications. It always comes with a rectangular coil of wire, and this element rotates on an axis. To add on this, this coil lays between the poles of two permanent magnets. Its rotation results to changes in the magnetic field hence the process generate an electromotive force between the coil ends.

Benefits of AC generators

There are various benefits of AC generators to users such as:

  • Simple design

The reasons as to why most parts of AC Motors (AC-Motoren)are said to be of simple design is because they only have a single moving part which is called the rotor. Its simplicity does not end there since they are easier to maintain, less expensive and have a quieter in operation.

To add on that, they have a longer life span as compared to DC motors, reasons being the DC motors have carbon brushes and a commutator that tend to wear out over a period. They also produce a loud noise and unpleasant smell due to the friction generated by its components; hence, they have to be replaced throughout the life of the motor.

  • Matching Voltage Not Necessary

Another benefit of using an AC motor is that their transformers are compatible as compared to DC motor. In addition, AC motor enables the user to convert the current to another voltage using a transformer while for the DC motor generator, it is very necessary for it to produce a voltage at a certain level.

Limitations

Limitations for AC generators include:

  • Greater insulation required

AC generators have a massive voltage, which is needed to supply a certain amount of power this results to a higher level of insulation. While dealing with AC it comes with difficulties and a lot of risk as compared to DC motors and they lead to difficulties while in use.

  • Transformer use

The AC generator requires a transformer to ease long distance transmission, because they require a special design that will prevent the discharge of the higher voltage produced on one side. The transmission happens once the low voltage converts to a much level necessary.

  • Issues involved

AC power often experiences sparks and overheating since it generates high currents and this led to electric shock and fires, which is a risk to properties and lives of workers. These motors are also not durable since they generate massive currents, which result in such damages.

Bottom Line

DC and AC generators have their drawbacks and benefits. However, the advantages of using AC generators outdo the disadvantage involved; therefore, AC generators are the best as compared to DC generators.
