Uses Of Milling Machines

Milling Machines are used to carve and drill raw products in order to create different shapes and nearly finished products. These machines drill holes and make precise shape out of any solid material. These machines are made of two main parts: the head and motor. The head holds the tools which are used to mill the materials and the motor changes the speed of the tool. A number of operations can be performed using a milling machine.   • Drilling
It is one of the most commonly performed operations on a milling machine. The head of the machines is tilted front or back, depending on the angle where there is a need to drill. The drill spilling depends on the kind of material used in the operation. For instance, aluminum requires a harder spin, while materials such as steel need a slower spin.
  • Cutting
  • A milling machine is used for cutting a wide variety of metals such as aluminum and stainless steel. According to the material which is to be cut, the moving pace of the machine can be set. Softer materials are milled at higher speeds, while harder materials require slow speed.
  • Tapping
  • Milling machines are used for tapping holes. Tapping is done by two ways: by using a tapping head or by a spindle. The tapping head is tightened into the spindle and is set at very low speed. When the tap hits the top of the hole, it gets automatically reverse as soon as it reaches the desired depth. In some cases, the tap is placed in the spindle and is used at very low RPMs.

    Components of a Milling Machine

    A typical milling machine consists of a cutter, spindle axis, worktable, electric drive motor and a coolant system. The spindle axis holds the cutter in place which keeps on revolving around it. This axis is adjustable to varying speeds. The worktable supports and feeds the material to the machine for further operation. This worktable is movable and generally moves in two directions. Modern worktables are power operated.

    Milling machines can be operated manually or digitally by using a device which is called computer numerical control. Digitally operated machines eliminate the need for a machine operator which reduces the risk involved in operating the machine and also cuts down the labor cost involved.
