Industrial water treatment systems come in many shapes and sizes, from compact and straightforward units to complex multi-unit applications that work for multiple processes. When planning your water treatment system, you need to consider what your needs are and what processes you are designing for.

A wastewater treatment plant has a combination of complex procedures. Essentially, this system treats used streams into an effluent that can be discharged into the environment or municipal treatment plants. The processes for this treatment depends largely on the type of contaminants present in the used streams. It is important to understand how the processes vary for each industry and which one will best suit your needs.

Essentially, there are three questions you must ask yourself before investing in a wastewater treatment facility.

  • Does your plant processes result in an effluent that has a high concentration of BOD, oil, and grease?
  • Is the effluent rich in suspended metal particles that include iron, nickel, zinc, and lead? This type of effluent is usually seen in plants that work with metal works.
  • Does the effluent have a high concentration of inorganic contaminants?

The industrial wastewater treatment technologies are mainly divided according to these considerations. Another critical aspect of designing your wastewater treatment plant is to understand what the regulatory requirements are. Depending upon where your plant is, you will have different regulations and authorities who will have a preference to two outcomes, either releasing the treated effluent into the environment or to the local municipal plant.

The regulatory authority will have guidelines for the treated effluent ranging from the amount you can discharge per day to what can be discharged. For example, if your plant processes canned beans, then the resulting wastewater will have to go through biological wastewater treatment where the organic substances are broken down. This is a particular issue if you are releasing the effluent into a lake as the natural composition of the habitat will change significantly if it is high in organic waste. It is used to remove any contaminants that left over after primary treatment.

When releasing the effluent to the local municipal plant you will have to run your used stream through a primary treatment of wastewater. This is because most municipal plants will have certain requirements before they accept your effluents. You might be fined heavily if you don’t follow these regulations.

Have a treatability study done to determine which processes to have in your industrial wastewater treatment plant. This study or test will identify which contaminants are present in your wastewater. Based on these results you should be able to choose amongst the many industrial wastewater treatment systems available.
