Five Candidates Recruiters Should Know

When looking for true talent at the executive level, or when looking for opportunities as a candidate at these high positions, it is critical to know both the position requirements and the candidate’s strengths and weaknesses in five critical areas. All executive recruiters are looking for successful placements and the success of the candidate is dependent on a good match. While leadership skills and technical skills can be evaluated from past experience results, there are five categories of skills that are seldom, if ever, fully found in one individual. Careful analysis of what the organization needs, and how much of each particular category a candidate possesses, will make the probability of a great match rise. In the simplest of terms: every organization needs these five personas to thrive and every good executive recruiter can find these people for you!

Think of each personality in terms of players on a team:

  1. The Administrator - The focus of this person is the process, the rules, and the bottom line. This persona is critical to making an organization run smoothly and efficiently. This is the referee who makes sure the players are within the lines, they call any fouls, and keep the clock running.
  2. The Salesman - Always looking to the new opportunity, this person is the source of new products, new markets, and growth. This will be the go getter of the team or your offense players; initiating contact, networking, and building client relationships is their game and then they pass the ball to the rest of the team.
  3. The Coach - Their focus is on their colleagues and the overall performance of others. This person plans for the career growth of others, ensures their skills are honed, and that they are motivated to do their best. Obviously, this person is coaching the players and calling the shots. They can see the big picture and move the rest of the players into position to score.
  4. The Deliverer - They is focused on the customer. This person is constantly aware of how the products and services are being perceived by the market, and they are dedicated to improving the relationship between the customers and the company. These are your defensive players. While they do deliver the final shots, they also make sure to guard the lines and keep everyone protected.
  5. The Visionary - This person is dedicated to the future. We think of them as an entrepreneur who sees, or synthesizes a plan for the organization and can lead others in the chase of that vision. These are your cheerleaders and your fans rolled into one; not only do they support the team; they also push them forward and remind them how much they have to look forward to.

Hopefully this slightly cheesy sports analogy will help you identify the five types of recruits that you need to know. Each candidate plays an important role in the company that you are staffing, so make sure to recognize their needs and place the employees where they can make the best impact!
