Also known as a power supply cable, Electrical cable is an electrical unit which consists of multiple numbers of independent conductive wires. The wires within the cable may be stranded, solid core, braided or a combination of these. It is a cable which provides an electrical connection for computer systems, T.V, telephones, or power stations. An electrical cable offers a reliable method of transmitting power from the generator to the end user.

Components of an Electrical Cable

An electrical cable is made up of a conductor which transmits the electricity flow and an insulation which has this electricity flow in the conductor. The other components of an electrical cable are discussed here:

Conductor

The conductors used in the cable aids the smooth flow of electric current. Copper is the most widely used material for conductors. In some cases, aluminum conductors are also used. They are used for power transmission cables in electrical distribution networks.

Insulation

The insulation is the outermost layer of the cable which is made up of polymer or plastic. It surrounds the conductor and insulates it from external contact. Thermoplastic and thermosetting are the two types of insulations present.

Metal protection

Some electrical cables also come with a metal protection. Electrical metal protection helps in insulating the signals which pass via the conductors from possible external interferences. Metal protection helps in protecting the cable from external problems. Metal protection is of two types:

  • Screens

    The most commonly used screens are the ones which are made of bare or tinned copper braiding. This braiding is applied over the cable conductors.

  • Armours

    The armours may be made up of steel or aluminum. They provide mechanical protection through steel wires, tapes or wire braiding.

Outer sheath

In almost all the cases, electrical cables come with an outer sheath. The main function of this outer sheath is to provide protection to the wires. It is usually made up of polymer material and is used depending upon the nature of the insulating material.

An electrical cable can be made more flexible by stranding the wires. It can be organized by using cable trays, cable ties or cable lacing.
