The hot and sweaty summer season in Pakistan is known for some very bothersome ‘gifts’. Ranging from mild, irritating ones to some rather deadly conditions like heatstroke, these gifts prove that summer is a cruel friend for most Pakistanis. That is perhaps one reason why most of us do not like it when the season shows up on our doorsteps, even when it brings with it a whole batch of mangoes; mangoes are just a distraction from what summer really has in store!

Moreover, these gifts are even more bothersome when they show up on the skin and make going to your friend’s wedding an unfortunate nightmare. With the temperatures showing no indications of going down, especially for the folks in Karachi, one can only expect even more of these unwanted occurrences. However, fret not, for we are bringing to you just what you need to look out for and how to stay away.

Here are the 4 annoying skin diseases summer brings and how we can avoid them.

Sunburn

Sunburn is probably one of the most irritating conditions in summer, and we do not just mean figuratively. The sunburned area often causes much pain and could itch as well. Furthermore, if you regularly visit outdoor swimming pools or the Karachi sea itself, you are much more prone to getting sunburned. In other words, sunburns could end up eliminating your most favorite habits in the season, especially if you live near the sea! More importantly, let us not forget the resulting darkened skin which makes us question our very identity and self-esteem!

Do not worry though, as we have just the thing you could do to avoid it

Prevention Plan

Try to go out less in the sun. However, if the outdoors, with all their heat and sweat, are that alluring do go out wearing a wide-brimmed hat and properly covering clothing. Additionally, wear sunglasses and sunscreen as well. These are the standard protective measures you could implement in order to avoid getting barbequed by the sun.

Sun Allergy

If your genes are that gracious and you yourself are gracious to your body so much so that you remain outside in the blistering sun for most of the day, you could develop an allergic reaction to the sun. You can get hives. However, this reaction to allergies does not normally happen by itself; the medications a person is on along with genetics are a determining force.

Hives would appear as itchy, painful splotches on the skin which might affect a large area.

Prevention Plan

One could first examine the medicine container and look for any warning for skin allergies, also known as hives, on exposure to the sun. You need to be on the lookout for certain antibiotics and pain medications. If the container does say that an allergic reaction is possible, then do keep away from the sun.

One could also follow the standard procedure of keeping much of your skin out of the sunlight’s reach. This standard procedure includes wearing more covering clothes, sunscreen, and hats.

Melasma

One ailment that could cause a lot of damage to self-esteem is Melasma. This is yet another condition that is related to the skin’s pigmentation. Too much exposure to the sun could darken your color even more; it would make you feel even more unsightly if the darkening occurs in brown patches. This patch formation is Melasma, a fairly harmless, although annoying, skin problem. In most cases, this condition occurs on the sun-exposed areas on the face like the nose, forehead, cheeks and upper lip. It might also show up on other body parts like the forearms.

Prevention Plan

The prevention plan is fairly simple: restrict the sun-exposed area of the skin. One could achieve this by following the procedures mentioned in the prevention plans above. These include wearing long-sleeved clothes and pant along with a good sunscreen. Individuals who have family members with this condition should observe more care.

Acne

Acne is perhaps the chief most irritating problem related to skin that is prevalent across the young population. This issue arises when the sweat clogs the pores when it mixes with bacteria and oils. The most apparent forms of acne are pimples. These pimples break out in places where the sebaceous glands are present in the highest numbers, like the face, chest, back and shoulders.

About 80 percent of all youngsters have some form of acne. While the physical symptoms are not dangerous at all, acne has a profoundly negative effect on the psychological state.

However, like every condition on this list, this condition is also easily preventable.

Prevention Plan

Dermatologists stress upon avoiding irritating the skin. It is recommended that instead of wiping sweat off with a towel, one should blot it from the skin so that irritation could be avoided. Regularly washing sweaty clothes is also recommended. One should also carefully choose the products they use; they should look for the label ‘oil free’ or ‘will not clog pores’. This is how one could prevent pimples from appearing.

Summer is a hard season and it intends to be hard at the skin too. Year after year, it claims the tears of millions of crying teenagers who wish they could turn the sun off just to save their skin’s grace. How can we blame them? After all, no amount of makeup or beauty soaps can wash away the dark splashes of skin terror it leaves on these poor souls.

With this list, however, we have given you the key to skin-ly heaven, or heavenly skin. A chance to save face and an opportunity to look fabulous, even when everyone around appears roasted to perfection.
