Composite material lighting poles have taken over the market in a very short span. Metal poles made of ferrous material such as steel and aluminium are susceptible to damage and corrosion from atmosphere. Composite materials are anisotropic by nature and hence have way more tolerance against atmosphere compared to metal poles. Fiberglass- reinforced plastic poles, also called FRP lighting poles, are most commonly used composite material poles.

Fibreglass- reinforced plastic is prominently used to construct the main framework of shipping tanks, boats, navy vessels, air ducts and pipes. FRP is made from a combination of fibreglass reinforcements and other thermosetting resins and is one of the least reactive compounds. Natural atmosphere comprising of moisture, salinity and frequent temperature change can be much more problematic for metal poles than FRP poles.

FRP poles are specially recommended for areas with high temperature fluctuation, marshlands and coastal areas. These poles have a long life and are easily reusable and recyclable making them economical. FRP poles also have various advantages over metal poles such as:

Mounting

Metal poles are much heavier than FRP poles and require a much solid foundation than the other. It is recommended to have a concrete foundation for erecting metal poles. In contrast, FRP poles can be supported by softer ground surfaces.

Transportation

FRP poles are easy to transport due to their light weight and can even be handled manually. Metal poles on the other hand are much heavier and require more care during transportation.

Construction

Metal poles generally are constructed with joints in them to distribute the load more efficiently while FRP poles can easily be constructed without any joints. This makes them more reliable and easy to maintain.

Maintenance

FRP poles require almost no attention or maintenance once they are installed. These composite poles are resistant to weather conditions and don’t need extra protection unlike metal poles to protect them from corrosion or other damages.

Aesthetics

FRP poles rarely lose colour and do not require regular paint jobs unlike metal poles. They can be ordered in various colours and plastic being very easy to mould it is easier to manufacture poles with desired designs and shapes making them appealing and adding to the landscape.

Relocation

Metal poles are much heavier than FRP poles and are impossible to relocate without employing heavy cranes for the job. FRP poles can easily be relocated manually.

Cost efficient

FRP poles are much more cost efficient than metal poles for various reasons. Besides low transportation cost and low maintenance they also are much cheaper to install. They are non conductive and hence don’t require earthing or any protection from current leakage.

Safe

FRP pole’s less weight makes them much safer than metal poles in case of accidents. FRP poles are also non-inflammable and perfectly insulated making them ideal for lighting poles.
