Ingredient Formula CAS No.
Ferrous Sulphate Monohydrate FeSO4.H2O 7720-78-7
Section 3: HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
Summary
Moderate toxicity - irritant. Use safe work practices to avoid eye - skin contact and accidental
hand to mouth transfer. Toxic by ingestion, although fatal poisonings in adults are rare.
Eye Irritant. Contact may result in lacrimation, irritation, pain, redness and conjunctivitis.
Prolonged contact – corneal burns and possible permanent damage.
Inhalation Low irritant. Over exposure at high levels may result in mucous membrane irritation of
the nose and throat with coughing.
Skin Irritant. Prolonged contact may result in irritation, itching and possible skin rash.
Ingestion Moderate toxicity. Ingestion of large quantities may cause vomiting, acidosis, bloody
diarrhoea and shock. In some cases, necrosis and haemorrhage of the gastrointestinal tract, liver
damage and death may occur. Scarring of the gastrointestinal tract may occur in non-fatal cases.
Section
4: PRECAUTIONS
Flammability Non flammable. No fire or explosion hazard exists.
Reactivity Incompatible with oxidising agents (eg. hypochlorites, peroxides) and acids (eg.
sulfuric acid). Corrosive to some metals. May cause staining.
Ventilation Do not inhale dusts. Use in well ventilated areas - open doors and windows. In poorly
ventilated areas, mechanical extraction ventilation at source is recommended. Maintain dust
levels below the recommended exposure standard.
Section
5: PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
PPE Wear dust-proof goggles and PVC or rubber gloves. When using large quantities or where
heavy contamination is likely, wear coveralls. Where an inhalation risk exists, wear a Class P1
(Particulate) Respirator.
Section 6: EMERGENCY
Spillage: If spilt, collect and reuse where possible. Wear dust-proof goggles and PVC/rubber
gloves. Where heavy contamination is possible or where an inhalation risk exists, wear a Class P1
(Particulate) respirator and coveralls. Absorb with moist sand or similar and place in sealable
containers for disposal.
Environment Soluble iron salts may be toxic to animals (at ~500 ppm), fish (at ~100 ppm) and
aquatic microorganisms. Levels in drinking water should be below 3 ppm.
Fire and Explosion
Non flammable. If product is present in a fire, toxic gases may be evolved. Evacuate area and
contact emergency services. Remain upwind and notify those downwind of hazard. Wear full
protective equipment including Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) when combating fire.
Use waterfog to cool intact containers and nearby storage areas.
Extinguishing Non flammable.
Section 7: FIRST AID
Eye Flush gently with running water. Seek medical attention if irritation develops.
Inhalation If over exposure occurs, leave exposure area immediately. Seek medical attention if
symptoms develop.
Skin Gently flush affected areas with water.
First Aid Facilities Eye wash facilities and safety shower are recommended.
Section 8: SAFE HANDLING
Storage Store in cool, dry, well ventilated area, removed from oxidising agents (eg.
hypochlorites), acids, metals and foodstuffs. Ensure containers are adequately labelled,
protected from physical damage and sealed when not in use. Large storage areas should have
appropriate ventilation systems.
Waste Disposal For small amounts, cover with moist sand or similar, collect and dispose of to an
approved landfill site. Avoid generating dust.
Transport Not regulated for transport purposes.
