Boulton: Wedding favors

I may have mentioned once before that I love giving party favors. It is a wonderful way to send off your guests at the end of an evening with something fun and memorable.

This has taken on a new life in the wedding category. Wedding favors have become a way for couples to share their personalities with their guests, and also how much their presence means.

I recently had the pleasure of working on a wedding for a friend’s daughter. This took on a truly personal note as I knew the entire family over many years of DHS sports, and because the bride to be had once done some sitting for my daughters. Little did I know that under her sharp, legal mind there was an inner event planner waiting to be unleashed. She embraced the idea of making her wedding her own in a characteristically fun-loving way.

There were clever save the dates, monogrammed chambray shirts for her bridesmaids, and baskets of flip flops for tired dancing feet (or, too-tight Jimmy Choos). The tables were set with little Kraft boxes, filled with specialty foil wrapped chocolates that were favorites from the bride’s childhood, neatly tied up in navy gross-grain ribbon and sealed with a monogram label with a personal catch phrase that summed up the couple. It was perfect!

For wedding favors, sometimes it is all about the packaging. Whether you are giving cookies, chocolates, a magnet, or anything in between – a beautiful box or stunning swag bag is just a good call. I love the impact of the presentation that a favor can make and almost don’t even care what’s inside.

At another wedding that I recently did, we had fabulous French macaroons in an incredible rainbow of colors and flavors packaged in little pink pastry boxes from LaTulipe Desserts. They were delectable little bites that did not disappoint.

The favors that almost never go to waste, and are the most enjoyed are sweet treats or tasty little morsels that guests can take with them to savor later and reminisce about good times.

Food-centric favors are big. You can personalize your favors to coordinate with your theme If it’s a barn wedding, then little jar of local honey, tagged with a simple "Thanks for bee-ing here with us" would be cute. Or, if a Cape Cod destination wedding, small boxes of salt water taffy would be delicious and nostlgic.

If you are a DIY-er and have the time, try chocolate sourdough pretzels wrapped in glassine bags and tied with ribbon in your wedding colors. It couldn’t be simpler. Just remember with perishable items to plan to bake the week of your wedding and keep the items refrigerated for freshness. And now that we are in the summer months, be sure not to display chocolate or other melt-y items outdoors in the heat of the day.

Another favorite type of favor is eco-friendly or plant based variety. I love the idea of giving your guests flower seeds or a starter plant like mini succulents in little clay pots that they can grow at home. I also love a pretty sachet of dried lavender that they can use to scent or decorate their homes, creating a calming and beautiful space.

Last but not least, there are functional sort of favors. A piece of framed art, a beverage koozie, or an embroidered blanket (great at outdoor weddings for guests to cozy up in late in the evening) — are all useable items — but still will remind your guests of your love for them every time they glance at the picture, keep their beer frosty cold, or snuggle under their comfy blanket.

Can you remember the last time you got a favor? A favor is a simple token and a brilliant way to show not only your personality but also your gratitude and appreciation for the people who are so important in your lives.
